When Chevrolet introduced the fourth generation of the Corvette, it was a sensation. The first all new Corvette in 14 years, with a modern chassis, a sleek, timeless design and futuristic digital liquid crystal gauge cluster. C4 outbalanced the loss of brutal horsepower from the past with a sharp handling and strong brakes, and also saw the return of the convertible. The owner of this 1986 Targa cherished it for 33 years and enjoyed showing it off mostly on the weekends, but now he needs the room in the garage and is ready to pass his Vette on – with only 54,000 original miles!
Always been a California car, this Vette was originally owned by an older lady from Long Beach. After her passing, her daughter inherited the red Corvette but didn't like it, and so she sold it to a Highway Patrol officer who had it painted black. When he needed to generate money for a condo, he sold it to the recent owner – a Carlsbad resident - in 1989 with 17,000 miles on the odometer. He would never add more than 1,100 – 1,200 miles per year, resulting in the very low original mileage of 54,000 after 33 years of ownership. The clean California title is in the owner's name.
All plastic fantastic here. Fiberglass can't rust, and there's no chrome trim that could fade, neither. The body of this Vette appears straight, in an original, unmolested condition, with a 34+ years old respray from “Bright Red” to “Black” which still shows a glossy shine. Front and rear fascia (call it bumper, if you will...) are free from cracks and scuff marks, all glass and rubber seals are in good condition, and so are the OEM “salad shooter” aluminum wheels, wrapped in almost brand new BF Goodrich g-Force Sport tires.
The well preserved, original (and unmolested!) condition continues on the inside of the vehicle. The dashboard and interior plastics, often victims to UV ray cracks, appear in very good, clean condition. The electronic LCD gauge cluster turned too dim in the recent past and was replaced about 2 years ago, all other creature features work as expected. Carpet and rear hatch struts have been replaced as well, the A/C blow cold but was rarely used (who needs A/C when you have a Targa roof?) and could use a recharge. Only the driver seat needs some TLC – it's stitching came off in places.
Under C4's clamshell hood lurks the trustworthy L98 V8 with Tuned-Port Fuel injection, generating 235 hp. It is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, and with less than 60,000 miles on the clock, this unit is barely broken in, but has experienced regular maintenance. The radiator has been replaced about 2 years ago.
The Carfax history report confirms there are no issues with this Corvette – no reported accidents, deployed airbags, structural damages or recalls.
Not many people remember what a big deal C4 was when it came out – it stayed in production for 12 model years until 1996 and has aged very well since. But like with many other high performance sports cars and GT's, regular maintenance had often been given up, making it considerably harder to find well preserved, unmolested original cars. The owner of this black Vette only enjoyed it on the weekends, never in the rain, with the Targa top off and the windows down, and although he calls it a “pretty good fun car” for the buck, he created the basis for a long life as future collectible. You'll have to dig deep to find another C4 this good and original – the opportunity is yours!
