If you appreciate driving and showing-off your classic cars, then this 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe will definitely appeal to you. Nothing too over-the-top, mind you, just great execution on the top-quality restoration, a well-sorted 350 V8 and auto transmission drivetrain, and a custom leather interior that will leave them awestruck at the car show.
There are no radical modifications on the body, no chopped roof, no shaved handles, and all the original Ford trim remains in place, albeit restored and shined-up nicely. The 1940 Ford is incredibly popular with restorers and rodders alike, thanks to its combination of iconic styling and practical, big car comfort. This one was clearly built to drive, but like all hand-built cars, the attention to detail and level of quality is beyond what you'd get from some mass-produced transportation appliance. The beautiful driver-quality black paint is bereft of flames or graphics, a refreshing change from the usual stuff, and the Ford's trim ensures that it's enough to grab onlookers' attention. From the look of things the panels are likely original Henry Ford steel, so there's a solid feeling on the road and the doors open and close like proverbial bank vaults. The fastback coupe body is sleek and ideally lends itself to a lowered and raked stance without losing any of its classic good looks, and even though it's a two-seater it's quite obvious that this is a big car. Chrome and stainless trim was restored rather than painted or removed altogether, and even the rubber-covered running boards survived the conversion intact. It's no longer perfect, as a few signs of use and age have accrued in the years since this '40 was restored, but the imperfections are rather minimal (black tends to exacerbate light swirl marks in the paint, and a professional buff would instantly restore former glory in the finish) in the big picture, and the curb appeal is undeniable.
Inside, there's a 100% custom Saddle leather cabin that does a great job of making the interior feel modern and up-to-date, and the high-end workmanship alone justifies the price point. The original bench seat was jettisoned and replaced with an all-day comfortable split-back bench seat that was beautifully upholstered in bespoke Saddle leather and gator-skin inserts, and a set of matching door panels with billet hardware and the very same gator-skin inserts complete the finished look. Man, it's obvious that a ton of time and money was spent getting the cabin this dialed-in, and the high-end workmanship shines through. Plush carpets line the floors and are protected with matching floor mats, and the bottom of the door panels are lined with the same high-end materials for an all-in-one look and feel. A tilt steering column is topped by a banjo-style wheel with a thick, leather wrap around the rim, and an original-style floor shifter and knob teams with a chrome lever and leather skirt that add to the luxurious look and feel on the interior. Modern conveniences like cold R134a air conditioning, power windows, and a powerful Pioneer double-din AM/FM/CD/DVD/AUX/Navigation head unit with a bright LED entertainment system have all been beautifully integrated into the original Saddle dashboard, which also houses a full array of antique-style gauges from VDO. That Pioneer head unit powers a full array of speakers inside the cabin, including the Rockford-Fosgate 'Punch' subwoofers integrated into the custom, gator-skin and leather lined speaker box behind the seats. So yeah, you can either scare the neighbors with this '40s cackling exhaust or the bumping tunes from the stereo system the choice is yours! Out back, the spacious trunk was completely restored to match the interior and features all the same leather, gator-skin, and plush carper fabrics found in the cabin, along with custom panels that stow away the battery and wiring.
Under the pointed hood you'll find a 350 cubic inch Chevy V8 built for both reliability and performance. Go easy on the throttle and it's happy to cruise, pulling down a relatively decent MPG rating. But open all four barrels on the Edelbrock carburetor atop the aluminum intake and it really wakes up, pulling this rounded cruiser deep into the speedometer without a lot of drama. There's plenty of chrome and shiny stuff under the hood, including those finned valve covers and triangle-shaped air cleaner, so don't be afraid to open it up at shows. A full MSD ignition system ensures this '40 starts right up every time, and with a chromed alternator, modern A/C compressor and giant radiator up front, this baby is ready for the modern road. The chassis is well engineered, with a Mustang II style front clip with disc brakes and power steering, while out back, leaf springs and air shocks locate the heavy-duty rear end.
