This 1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 Convertible is the first year for the legendary nameplate. That's why it's exciting to find an early example with a low VIN production number. So it's already appealing before you check out the correct-style V8 and nice details of this now-legendary droptop classic.
These first-year Firebirds were an instant classic thanks to the bold styling. It starts with the unique chrome bumper that gives the whole front end Pontiac's wide track look. Pontiac was GM's performance division, so it's nice to have sporty details on display, like the hood tach and twin hood scoops with 400 callouts. The black convertible top looks terrific against the red exterior, so you can tell they invested nicely to keep this one look good when the roof is up. But a convertible is really all about top-down fun. That's why you get a similar appeal from the crisp full black interior. Deep color on the door panels, sail panels, and carpet show a proper recent investments. This is built with a driver-oriented layout that gives you bucket seats, a center console, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a sporty style from the deeply recessed round gauges.
Under the hood is a year-correct 400 cubic-inch V8. It's nicely on display as the dark engine bay really funnels your full attention to the bright Pontiac turquoise block in the middle. Add in bright valve covers and a matching air topper with callouts, and this one is a nice total package. The V8 fires up nicely as it inhales deeply with a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor. And it exhales with added authority as long tube headers add power while feeding a newer flowmaster dual exhaust. The TH400 three-speed automatic transmission is stout. And this is an all-around nice driving package with power steering and power brakes.
