DESCRIPTION

THE CAR

This is a 1966 Ford Thunderbird in Silver Mink over a black vinyl interior, with a black vinyl roof. It\'s a 390 car with a three-speed automatic, bucket seats, a center console, and the curved rear bench that makes a mid-sixties Thunderbird interior look like nothing else Detroit was building.

1966 is the last year of the fourth-generation Thunderbird, and it\'s the one people who know these cars tend to want. The front end got the single-bar grille with the big center emblem, and the car still carries the long-hood, formal-roof proportions that defined the car before the four-door era changed what a Thunderbird was.

Silver Mink over black is a combination that works on this body. The silver keeps the length of the car readable instead of swallowing it, and the vinyl roof breaks up the greenhouse the way it was meant to.

WHAT IT HAS

A 390 cubic inch V8 with a three-speed automatic.

The option list is where this car earns its keep, because a Thunderbird was supposed to be the loaded one. Power steering. Power brakes. Power windows. Factory air conditioning. And the Swing-Away steering wheel, which is the feature every Thunderbird person asks about first - the column slides the wheel nine inches to the right when you open the door and put it in park, so you can actually get out of the car without doing gymnastics.

Inside, it\'s black vinyl with bucket seats and a full-length center console running back to the rear. Wood grain accents throughout. The rear seat is the curved bench, which wraps around the back of the console and gives the interior a lounge quality that no other American car of the period really matched.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

A few honest notes about owning one of these.

This is a heavy car with a 390 and a three-speed automatic, which means it\'s a cruiser. It\'s comfortable at speed, it\'s quiet, and it is not quick by muscle car standards. That was never the point of a Thunderbird - Ford was selling personal luxury, not quarter-mile times. If you want something that rides beautifully and gets looked at everywhere, this is it. If you want something that pulls hard off a light, it isn\'t.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Thunderbird started in 1955 as a two-seat answer to the Corvette and lasted two years in that form before Ford figured out the real money was in a four-seat personal luxury car. That decision created a whole segment, and by the mid-sixties the Thunderbird was the car a successful person bought when they didn\'t want a Cadillac and didn\'t want anything sporty.

The 1964 through 1966 cars are the high point of that idea. Sequential taillights, the Swing-Away wheel, the wraparound interior, and a long list of power options that were still genuinely unusual at the time. 1966 closed out the generation before the 1967 redesign brought a four-door model and moved the car toward something more conventional.

These are also, for the moment, undervalued next to their contemporaries. A comparably optioned Mustang or Impala from the same years costs real money. A loaded 390 Thunderbird with factory air and the Swing-Away column still trades for a fraction of what it took to build, and it has a presence those cars don\'t.

HOW TO BUY IT

The car is at our shop in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania. We\'re happy to shoot a walk-around video and send additional photos, including underbody shots. Third-party inspections are welcome. We charge no documentation fees. We can help coordinate out-of-state transport, but the carrier choice is yours.
