1971 Plymouth Road Runner Hardtop
For consignment, a 1971 Plymouth Road Runner hardtop showing 21,408 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Just 3,730 Road Runners had a 383ci V8 and manual transmission in 1971 and according to our consignor, only about 455 were produced with TorRed paint. This restored example has many new items added since 2024 and a period correct 383.
Exterior
The gleaming two stage TorRed paint, more of an orange, is striking on its own, but coupled with the aggressive body style, the strobe stripes on the C-pillar, and the bulging black hood treatment, it becomes even more vibrant. Three part marker lights on the front fenders are accompanied by a 383 call out in black and a wing has been added on the decklid mirrored in aggressiveness by the front chin spoiler. 15-inch Mopar Rally wheels are the perfect fit of course, here wrapped in staggered width tires with an early 2025 date code. The purple bird itself is represented in three dimensions on the grille, on the bottom strobe decal, and framed in the Road Runner circle decal in back, this time with helmet in hand, or wing. The tail lights are part of the rear chrome bumper and put dual squares to each side of the reverse light, all framed in black. At a distance, the car looks perfect. Up close, our photographer points out some orange peel, inclusions, scratches, cracking, touched up chips and otherwise, some bubbling, and some front bumper alignment issues.
Interior
Simple door panels of black vinyl include a pair of symmetric gray inserts and chrome hardware and both present in nice condition. Inside, tuck and roll orange inserts fill the black bucket seats in fantastic shape other than some light fading on the passenger\'s side, and the configuration is mirrored in back. A rally steering wheel fronts the woodgrain covered instrument cluster with four gauges, an AM/FM radio, and the vent levers, all in an encapsulated pod. The passenger also gets wood in front adorned with a smiling, purple crested bird. Over the black loop carpet and perched on the tunnel is the pistol grip Hurst shifter, a chrome shafted icon of the muscle car world. Road Runner carpeted mats cover the footwells and a black headliner surrounds the moonroof above. A fitted vinyl mat covers the trunk floor which is clean and orange.
Drivetrain
More orange fills the engine bay where you\'ll find a 383ci V8, cast in 1970 and capable of 300 horsepower and topped by a newer 4-barrel carburetor. It\'s mated to a period correct A833 4-speed manual transmission with newer throwout bearing that routes power to the 8 inch rear with a consignor state 3.73 gear set and SureGrip. Power brakes and power steering on board and the bay presents cleanly.
Undercarriage
Newer exhaust highlights the clean underside and flows through glasspack style mufflers on its way to a rear exit via machine gun tips. Power brakes are here as front disc and rear drum and suspension consists of torsion bars and leaf springs, front and rear respectively.
Drive-Ability
We perch up in this orange bird and bring the 383 to life and we are rewarded with a pleasing exhaust note and responsive throttle as we fly around the test loop. Like the car, the ride itself is clean with no hiccups, good power, and smooth sailing. We noticed the tachometer and air grabber hood scoop are not working but all other functions operate as they should and we land back at the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Sparks, water bottle and nozzles, battery, starter, alternator and wiring harness are among the newer parts listed by our consignor aside from the previously mentioned items. This is a well sorted car in a smashing, (pumpkin?), color and potent drivetrain. Get your best ACME jetpack ready; it\'s time to head to the mall!
