DESCRIPTION

1970 Plymouth Road Runner Hardtop

For consignment, a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner hardtop showing 68,755 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This one is covered in TorRed and the big B-body defines the progression of muscle cars into the 70\'s. It has a numbers matching transmission.

Exterior
This one\'s got all the fun exterior cues. Plymouth written on the rear fenders large enough to see from the top of the stands at Talladega, the black band across the decklid rim, the wide black stripe on the hood, and trail of orange dust emitting from the quarter panel scoop and forms a side stripe behind the Road Runner bird smiling his way forward up front. In the very front, that face created by the quad headlights in the shapely grille over the larger marker light embedded in the chrome bumper is the epitome of muscle. Machismo is further enhanced by the hood pins, power bulge, and rear wing. 15-inch Cragar SS carry staggered size tires that are less than six years old. Imperfections include some minor pitting on metal bits, scratches, bubbles, imperfect filler fixes, less than perfect gaps, and waviness throughout due to filler.

Interior
White vinyl door panels offer a nice change of pace from black and both doors present nicely framed in the orange paint. The white vinyl split bench and rear bench are also in very good condition and obviously lighten up the interior quite a bit. The purple crested roadrunner is on the center of the steering wheel which leads to the black plastic dash that holds the speedometer and four smaller gauges offset to the right. An original looking AM radio sits under the heat lever and textured plastic covers the rest of the dashboard in good condition. The amazing pistol grip Hurst shifter rises from the floor like it\'s for the Outlaw Josey Wales, nicely coated in black loop carpet. The white headliner shows some looseness but is fully intact and the trunk is clean and covered with a vinyl mat and includes a Mopar wheel.

Drivetrain
Under the hood sits a clean 440ci V8 with finned Mopar performance valve covers and an aluminum radiator. It\'s topped by a 4-barrel carburetor and mated to its numbers matching A833 4-speed manual transmission. The 8 \" differential has 3.55 gears according to our consignor but the axle tag indicates 3.21 ratio. Drum brakes are equipped at all four wheels.

Undercarriage
Generally driver quality underneath with typical surface rust and some drops of oil on the pans. Headers send dual exhaust to the bottom side where they move through FlowMaster mufflers before arching over the rear axle and out the back via chrome tips. Suspension is configured as torsion bars up front and leaf springs in the back. We note several haphazard repairs to the unibody frame rails including welded patches on the left and right rear rails and one on the left front as well as patches installed in the rusted flooring.

Drive-Ability
The big 440 fires up without hesitation and delivers a fine exhaust tone from the headers and accompanying system. With the pistol grip firmly grasped, we work our way around the test loop where the car puts out some impressive power, tracks straight, and stops on demand. We note the radio is not working but all other functions operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

That a muscle car was named for and co-branded with a kid\'s cartoon is pretty remarkable. It would be akin to having a SpongeBob edition of something today. Although GTO\'s are seen as the originator of the muscle car movement, Mopar came to bat and hit a home run. So legendary were the Mopar muscle cars like this one, they came back in modern times and experienced a successful resurgence. This is one of the OG muscle cars in a striking exterior color, with a clean interior, and big 440 under the hood. Don\'t be left in the dust on this one!
