DESCRIPTION

Offered for sale is a rare and compelling piece of British motorcycle history: the 1989 Norton Commander P53. Powered by a 588cc liquid-cooled twin-rotor Wankel rotary engine and finished in a striking metallic blue, this machine combines smooth, rotary-driven performance with the comfort and functionality of a long-distance touring bike. With a top speed of approximately 125 mph and a uniquely vibration-free character, the Commander stands apart from anything else in its class.

At the core of this motorcycle is its innovative Wankel rotary engine, a concept first introduced by German engineer Felix Wankel in 1929. Compact, lightweight, and mechanically simple, the rotary layout offers exceptional power-to-weight efficiency and an unmistakably smooth ride. Norton\'s rotary development began in the 1970s after acquiring tooling from Hercules, who had ceased production of their W2000 rotary bike. Over the next decade, Norton refined the concept into a trio of increasingly advanced machines: the air-cooled Interpol 2 (P41) for police use, the upgraded water-cooled P52, and finally the P53 Commander-a fully outfitted civilian tourer.

This Commander is equipped with integrated full fairings and panniers, an enclosed chain final drive, and a host of Yamaha-sourced components including the brakes, wheels, forks, and switchgear. The thoughtful use of proven parts enhances both reliability and serviceability, while the unique rotary drivetrain provides truly distinctive performance. Production was extremely limited, with only around 253 units ever built, and no examples were officially exported to the U.S.

What sets this particular example apart is its documented status as the only known Commander in the United States to have been factory-refurbished by Norton Motors, including the application of molybdenum coating during engine service. Presented in excellent overall condition, it showcases the best of Norton\'s late-era engineering wrapped in one of the most unusual and collectible motorcycles of its time.

Whether you\'re a collector, an enthusiast of rotary-powered machines, or simply someone who appreciates rare and storied engineering, the Norton Commander P53 offers an unmatched blend of innovation, exclusivity, and road-going capability.
