There are iconic classics that were meticulously restored to preserve Yesteryear's motoring culture . They look pretty, please car show crowds and provide an entertaining vintage driving experience. This first generation Camaro is not that sort of car . It may look vintage, but was purposely built to chew up miles and rip the tarmac apart in the most brutal and fun way possible.

This owner is a rare species himself. He is a college shop teacher and educates new generations about Automotive happiness. He bought the big block Camaro, one of his favorite bucket list cars, from a student's grand parents to cure its rod knock . Well, at least this was the initial idea, but when passion took over the project, he ended up building a brand new engine and turned this muscular Pony into a hard-nosed Warhorse . We really need more teachers like this. The power plant is now 1,200 miles old, the clean Kansas title is in his name.

Originally a white car with black top, the Camaro received extensive bodywork in the past under previous ownership (both rear fenders have been professionally replaced) and a respray in Chevrolet's Orange. Rust is not present. The owner describes the paintwork as “driver quality”. It shows some chips and scratches. The white racing stripes feature pearl ghost flames. All chrome is in excellent condition. The suspension is lowered 2” in the front, 1” in the back. With the wide Rally wheels wrapped in 195/75-15 BFG rubber, the Camaro sits just right, with a nice, beefy stance.

The clean and undamaged interior in black vinyl had been removed by the owner. Kilmat sound deadening installed, then put back together. It was also upgraded with Pro-Comp Silver face gauges – speedometer and tachometer in the dashboard, air fuel ratio, oil pressure, coolant temperature, volts and fuel level in the center console. The console itself was sourced from a 2011 Camaro and blends in very nicely. A Grant GT steering wheel and drag shifter just add to the Camaro's attitude. All electric gadgets work exactly as expected.

No room to waste any words: 489 cu in. Big block V8 (454 bored .030over with Stroker crank) with internally balanced forged internals, 10.4:1 compression ratio, FiTech Mean Street electronic fuel injection with 800hp set-up, in-tank fuel pump and braided fuel lines, ceramic coated long tube headers, aluminum radiator w/ mechanical and electric fans, dual 3,5 in. exhaust w/ Flowmaster mufflers, freshly rebuilt TH400 w/ 2500 stall converter, 12 bolt rear end w/ 3.08 gear ratio and Eaton gear style locker. Underneath: front tubular control arms w/ adjustable coil over shocks, drilled and slotted front rotors, rear drums. Wowza.

Can someone please explain to the Lemon Squad guys that a massive 8.0 Liter/489 cu in. monster V8 with a HUGE cam just idles “roughly"? But it is nice that they dedicated a whole paragraph to every single paint chip and scratch they could find.

You may not like Camaro and you may not like the color Orange, but other than that, there's not much not to like . At least when you enjoy driving your classic like it was stolen and have the skills to handle a plus/minus 700 horsepower car. With all these over-designed, throw-away econoboxes and laptop-golf carts on today's roads, a road eating muscle monster like this Camaro is not just a classic car . It's a statement. A celebration of a simpler car from simpler times, when we were still allowed to have fun. Celebrate it, as long as you're still able to!
