DESCRIPTION

In the mid-1960s, Intermeccanica of Turin set out to build something different from both mass-produced sports cars and full exotica. Under Frank Reisner, the brand explored a transatlantic formula that defined a very specific moment in automotive history: Italian design language paired with dependable American V8 power. The result was the Italia, a hand-built GT that stood alongside the likes of De Tomaso and Iso, yet maintained its own distinct, more restrained identity.

This 1967 Spyder represents the earliest chapter of that story, coming from the model\'s inaugural production year. Built in extremely limited numbers, the Spyder captured the purest expression of the concept: long-hood proportions, open-top simplicity, and a chassis designed to let the Ford V8 do the talking.

Finished in a deep Italian racing red, reminiscent of Rosso Corsa, the car carries a classic period presence over Magnum 500 wheels that reinforce its Ford underpinnings. The character is unmistakably analog, powered by a Ford small-block V8 enhanced with individual throttle body induction for sharper response and a more immediate, mechanical feel. A 4-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive layout complete the traditional GT formula.

Inside, the car remains honest to its era. A cream interior with black carpeting sets a clean grand touring tone, anchored by Jaeger instrumentation and an original leather steering wheel that shows a natural, time-earned patina. A Hurst shift knob adds a subtle nod to its American performance influence.

Modern updates have been integrated with restraint and purpose. Wilwood brakes provide improved stopping confidence without altering the car\'s character, while a quad-tip exhaust system enhances the presence of the V8 without overwhelming its touring nature. A diamond-stitched hood insulation treatment adds a refined finishing touch under the engine bay.

What makes the Italia Spyder compelling is not just its rarity, but its position in a very specific era of experimentation, when small manufacturers were blending philosophies across continents in ways the industry no longer attempts. It is not simply Italian, nor purely American, but a true hybrid GT from a moment in time that cannot be repeated.

This example, showing just over 22,000 miles, captures that ethos with clarity and restraint. It presents as a highly original and carefully updated early-production Spyder, offering collectors a rare opportunity to experience one of the most distinctive transatlantic sports car concepts of the 1960s.
