DESCRIPTION

Rat-rod and 'patina' classics are all the rage right now. You know, those vintage rides that look like they've been used hard and put up wet, but underneath are nicely finished and totally road-worthy, making them a sleeper ready to tussle with anyone out on the street. This unique 1958 Chevrolet Biscayne nails that esoteric patina look, enhanced further by the one-year-only design of the model, and packs a thumping 350 ZZ4 V8 under the hood that's been mated to an upgraded overdrive transmission. Add in the A/C interior and that low-slung body raked atop of an Air-Lift suspension and oversized Ridlers, and you get one of the coolest looking and best driving 1958 'Bisquicks' we've ever seen.



Despite all the looks it's bound to get, nobody's going to confuse this big 4-door for a show car, but that's entirely the point. Artfully combining what look like the body parts from several different Biscaynes, this rough-and-tumble 'beauty' (remember, it's all in the eye of the beholder) definitely has that junkyard dog look that gets attention. But when you get closer, you'll see that the sheetmetal isn't quite as bad as advertised. Now let's not get ahead ourselves, there's plenty of dings, dents, rust, and paint imperfections to go around, but this isn't some dilapidated rat rod either. The panels still fit together nicely, the doors line up fairly well, and what's left of the old paint and chrome has blended together with the rust to form a unique look that we just can't stop looking at. Light blue and white are great colors that contrast the rust on the lower part of the body, and the dark hood and fender tops even give this hauler a performance vibe. The front grille is completely intact and is definitely the car's focal point, although we also love the look of the Excalibur sword-style side trim. And if you know anything about 1958 Chevrolet's, you already know the legendary tapered tailfin design is what brings the crowds in, and despite all this car's bumps and bruises the back end of this sedan still looks amazing. The remaining brightwork shines up just enough to add some flash, all the original lights and badges are in place where they're supposed to be, and the unique (and very expensive) factory glass and there's a ton of it on big 4-door like this is in great shape as well, tinted fairly dark for a cool custom look.



The stock interior is mostly original, although a few choice upgrades were introduced to make the cabin a bit more road ready. That's probably 100% original upholstery on the bench seats, which still looks great even with the rips/stains/splits, but thankfully they're not so trashed that you'd need to make a change straight away. In fact, the entire cab really adds to the patina vibe throughout the car, and the door panels, carpets, and headliner are fairly crummy, but you know, you'll ironically dig them because that's what being cool is all about (at least that's what the hipsters that make my coffee tell me). The original dash is still in place as well, and it's a really cool relic of peak American design, with all the original gauges, switches, and trim still in place. A few choice additions in the dash add to the ambience and improve the passenger's experience, including a retro-style AM/FM stereo, a full complement of auxiliary gauges that keep an eye on the engine and Air-Lift suspension, and a modern A/C system was also installed to keep the cabin comfortable (although it does need service). That original dual-ring steering wheel is cooler than 'The Fonz' ever wished he could be, and the original shifter now controls an upgraded 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission a nice upgrade over the original PowerGlide. The back seat is in slightly better shape than the front, although equally comfortable, and there's plenty of storage space inside the trunk, even with the Air-Lift compressor and original spare in tow.



With plenty of pop at the ready, the swapped-in 350 ZZ4 V8 under the hood is still very fresh and runs practically great. There's a lopey roller cam inside, an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and polished aluminum intake manifold up top, and chrome valve covers and a matching open-element air cleaner that add flash inside the original engine bay. It's not exactly beautiful under the hood, then again, that's also the point, but with all that shiny stuff and upgrades like the modern alternator and A/C compressor at the ready, it's far from dull. A big radiator ensures that this rough-looking Biscayne doesn't have rough-looking problems and there's a great-sounding dual exhaust system with Flowmaster-style mufflers for an appropriate soundtrack. The biggest upgrades are the aforementioned 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that really lets the lively small block come to life, along with the Air-Lift suspension that was added to improve the ride quality and set a variety of kill
