1950 DeSoto Custom Sedan
Hernando DeSoto was a Spanish Explorer who is credited to be the first European to cross the Mississippi. This momentous event is depicted in a massive work of art painted by William H. Powell, that hangs in the rotunda where the very few lie in state. Watch closely, and the next time they pan that room you'll see the painting.
For consignment, a 1950 4-Door Sedan that has seen some bodywork, a respray, and some upgrades in the power department. A clean well-kept example from all but 70 years ago.
Consigner states that all body work and prep as well as paint has been done by MAACO, and as one can see the car is covered in bright blue. Brite work, bumpers and chromed badging are presenting on fair to good condition. A large chromed "toothy grin" grille is watched over by the man himself, Hernando DeSoto who sits atop the massive hood. Steel panels are fairly straight and can be compared to the stainless belt line moldings which run almost the length of the car (some waviness). Stock DeSoto hub caps adorn all 4 corners.
A full interior restoration has been performed on this car, and this would include the trunk. Two massive gray cloth and red vinyl bench seats create the passenger compartment. A metal two tone gray and red dash front the area. What appears to be the original gauges are within the restored dash, and this is fronted by the original steering wheel. Speaking of this wheel the Bakelite material it is made up of is showing some wear and is missing slight areas within the circumference of the steering wheel. Matching the exterior bright blue, the tops of the door panels are bordered by red carpet, which also floods the floor. A nice gray headliner it's on top of the passenger area and is in good condition.
The Custom shared its engine design with the Deluxe and were powered by Chrysler's L-head 236.7 six cylinder, delivering 109 bhp at 3,600 rpm. A fluid drive semi-automatic provides the gearing.
Underside of this car shows some surface rusting, and a heavy spray of undercoating, which makes it hard to tell if there are any underlying problems. The frame though surface rusted, appears structurally sound. New shock absorbers, leaf springs, and an exhaust system are noted.
As consigner states all mechanical and electrical systems have been reviewed and repaired if needed. Because of this diligence with the upkeep, this car is extremely road worthy.
