Second chances don't come along very often! The Delray package was the fancy interior of the day, featuring an upgraded vinyl upholstery with "waffle-like" pleating, color-keyed to the exterior. Now we have a fancy car from the past, modified with modern running gear and built to perform.
Two-tone both inside and out, our Delray beauty hits the streets of Cranford, NJ with class and style. And our Owner has cruised those streets for 7 years, accumulating something near 2,000 miles. Her performance mouse motor gives her gusto, her old school look turns heads. She comes with a clear and clean New Jersey title in our Owner’s name.
Twilight Turquoise and white, she is just stunning, even witha few minor road marks. The front bumper is off just for a different look, it’s shiny and hiding in storage. The remaining brightwork and chrome show very, very nice. All glass is reported to be in excellent condition. No filler was discovered on her body; however, a small amount of rust was identified in the trunk floor. Her undercarriage shows nice detail. Overall, she is in just wonderful condition.
Delray, a neighborhood found in Detroit, denoted the ‘upgrade’ to a fancy two-tone vinyl interior for the ’56 210 model year. Our Del’ doesn’t disappoint. She’s clean, very original and shows the era in style. Upgrades gauges are incorporated under the dash, simple and with purpose. The speedometer cable needs to be addressed, as do the horn and radio. All window operations work proper as do the climate controls, wipers, head lights and interior lighting. Wear is noted on the original 55-year-old steering wheel, as is some wear noted on the upholstery. Her headliner is just excellent.
Modernized with a GM small block 350 cid V8 ‘mouse’ motor with 4 bolt mains. It was rebuilt in the recent past and estimated to be at 325 horses. The motor is topped with an aluminum intake and Holley carb with electronic choke. Backing the very dependable motor is the venerable GM Turbo-Hydramatic 350 automatic transmission, augmented with shift kit. Remaining running gear is reported as stock. Factory power drum brakes are still at each corner and perform flawlessly. Note the yellow traction bars – a classic look is what the Owner was focusing on.
The thorough review of this fine Tri-5 was performed by Lemon Squad. Our test-drive showed her finesse with very solid marks. Cosmetically, she is in very good condition, showing some paint flaws generated from use and one oxidation challenge discovered in the trunk. Interior challenges are noted with an inoperable speedometer, horn, and radio. Slight wear is also mentioned. Mechanically she received high praise. Strong performance, solid braking and firm handling bring the quality of her build to a very good to excellent standard.
The auto-world will never be without a Tri-Five, they are just too iconic and frankly, too loved. Refurbish one back retaining her classic style then add modern running gear, while tightening those old bolts, will give you a car that’s grand to show and get you home. During the 1950’s, automobile manufacturers were all trending towards a new, modern style, but it was Chevrolet that hit the home run. And like Baseball and Apple Pie, they’re just patriotic and American, having stood the test of ‘Auto-rama’ time.
