1971 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle
In lieu of the fact of being in production for just 13 years less time than the Cadillac CTS nameplate the Chevrolet Chevelle has been heralded as one of the best, most accomplished vehicles ever to don the bowtie. It shared a platform with the El Camino and Monte Carlo: Though it was available in convertible, two-door, four-door, and station wagon-wagon body styles, the multivariate Chevelle also share it's A-body platform with the El Camino, and the 1970-'72 Monte Carlo (though it was coded as a G-body in the latter). Despite wearing one of the most famous nameplates of all time, Chevrolet has yet to revive the name. Though we've heard rumblings and rumors over the years, Chevrolet has vehemently denied claims that a new Chevelle is in the works.
For consignment, the year to have, the Chevelle was 1971. From its sporty grille to the rear bumper with the round taillights inserted within and miles of Nevada Silver paint with black wide racing stripes, you can turn heads and the tires with this big block ass kicker.
Steeped in Nevada Silver which is now covering all the panels of this muscle car. The finish is nicely applied, however signs of rust in the form of bubbling and prior body filler application are present on the rocker panels as well as some invasive perforated rust in the same area. More bubbling and cracking is seen on both of the doors as well. All chromed trimmings are bright and shiny and badging is correct, and from top (silver no stripes) to bottom, to the front, (which is the original blacked out egg crate grille with SS badge in the center), to back, (housing the taillights in the bumper), this car is definitely tightly buttoned up. Dual wide black racing stripes are on the hood and trunk. Put on a set of 17 and 18-inch Boss Motorsport wheels and wrap them in staggered width blackwall rubber on all 4 corners ... It's show time!
A typical but really nice SS door panel with some vertical tuck and roll greets us as we slip into the nicely preserved tuck and roll black vinyl bucket seats. These cozy up to the center console with a SCS Cheetah shifter, a glove box and a silver insert console topper. Up front, below the padded dash top, is a simple dash with full rally gauges and several add ons which include a Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo. The original steering wheel fronts this dash and we see Vintage Air has been installed. These are the factory gauges and look just fab in their texture finished bezel. Black carpeting covers the floors, and above is a nice tight black vinyl headliner.
A stunner if you will upon opening the hood, it is showroom shiny, and sports a non-original big 454ci Chevrolet V8 circa 1974. Our consignor states that this mill was gone through by the prior owner. It has a beautifully painted orange/red block, and plenty of chrome and billet add ons like the chrome valve coverings and the air cleaner holder as well as the billet pulleys. On top is a Holley Sniper EFI system and on back is a circa 1974 TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. The rear axle is a 12-bolt 3.42 posi setup which was rebuilt 229 miles ago. Headers aid the exhale, and a MSD high voltage ignition has been installed along with an aluminum radiator and electric fans.
Much like the topside with slight surface rust and a heavy coating of undercoating but remaining structurally sound with some questionable areas seen on the rockers. Up front are power disc brakes and in the rear, power drums, independent coil springs for the fronts and a 4 link with coil springs for the rear. The aforementioned headers lead back to the Flowmaster exhaust system that ends in chrome tips. We note the one muffler is rusted and blown out and the other is one its way to the same fate.
This car lit right up, and ran beautifully on the test track. Plenty of acceleration from the 454 cubes, and good handling. Remember the Vintage A/C?...it blows ice cold. Braking was solid and all other functions were working!
An overall good presentation, even with the lower body issues, a fine runner and all very nicely finished off, particularly in the engine bay and the consignor stated original interior, but really all over. Great color combo, nice powerful mill, and all good on the SS Malibu trim Chevelle front.
