DESCRIPTION
1936 Packard 1401 Series Coupe
For consignment, a 1936 Packard 1401 Series coupe showing 97,028 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Restored in 1999, a total of 3,973 Packards were built on this chassis with body style numbers unknown, and as vehicle number 918248, it represents an early production model for 1936.
Exterior
When you think of Hollywood and 30\'s opulence, doesn\'t a regal Packard dressed in Arizona Beige come to mind? If you really want to make an entrance befitting of fame, you\'re going to need a tall grille that is swept back, torpedo shaped headlights, massive fog lights, and of course, a tall swan hood ornament. A long louvered hood is visually upstaged in profile by the sweeping front fenders that hold a covered spare on each side, just before a rounded cabin perches above uniquely shaped doors and wide running boards. The rear fenders also sweep dramatically with the rear deck following suit, all resulting in the crescendo of an external trunk, painted to match, and on a shelf beyond the rear bumper. Splendid 17-inch wire wheels are also painted to match with the epic Packard center caps and wide white wall tires. Imperfections include multiple inclusions, crazing in the paint, touched up scratches and chips, rough surfaces and missing paint under the rockers, bubbling, paint runs, deglazing on some glass, and filler cracks.
Interior
Black leather door panels are accented with ornate abstract crests in a sort of brown stone and both doors present nicely. Inside, a column tufted black leather split bench seat shines like new and sits behind a large steering wheel fronting an attractive woodgrain dashboard with beautifully designed gauges situated centrally and framed in stainless that also surrounds the glovebox. Our shifter rises from the floor that is covered in black carpet and the rumble seat in back is also black and clean.
Drivetrain
Looking proper and clean behind the engine cover is a 320ci inline 8 cylinder motor, rated at 130 horsepower and fueled with a 2-barrel carburetor. A 3-speed manual transmission is behind it and power is sent to 4.69 gears in the rear axle.
Undercarriage
Eighty-eight years old and still looking good! Here we have a single exhaust through a stock style muffler and terminating out back through a polished tip. Mechanical drum brakes are front and rear as are leaf springs for suspension. The wood framed doors, visible from underneath, are in good condition.
Drive-Ability
Imagining we\'re off to the Brown Derby, when in reality, we\'re staying close to the mall, we ride this fine chariot around the test loop with aspirations of hitting it big some day on the big screen! Dreams aside, this classic from the 30\'s rolls along just fine and has decent power, along with an airy sense of opulence. With the exception of the wipers and clock, all functions operate as they should, and we head East to the showroom rather than West to the Hollywood hills. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
\"Ask the man who owns one\" was coined in 1902 by James Ward Packard and their attention to quality never waivered. Here is a fine example of a wildly dramatic car. Ideal for the performer or for the performer at heart, because if you crave attention, this car will surely deliver on every front.
