We love air-cooled Porsches here at Motorcar Studio, and this 1984 Carrera is a great example with a lot going for it. For starters, it's a grey market car imported from France in the late 1980s. That means it has the desirable higher compression engine rated with 24 more horsepower than the U.S. spec cars from the same year.
Few driving experiences are more satisfying than topping out second gear in this car. It runs great and had a recent tune up and service including plugs, wires, vacuum lines and idle control valve and a new clutch cable. All linkages have been lubricated, and the car is very dry with no discernible leaks. All gauges, lights and indicators are working properly. The car comes with lots of service records, including a documented clutch replacement around 90,000 miles. It also comes with the original owner's manual, in French, no less.
This Porsche retains its original Fuchs in very good condition with new Toyo tires. The brakes feel great, as they should, with stainless steel brake lines, nearly new pads and Zimmerman cross-drilled rotors. And the suspension needs nothing, thanks to fairly recent Koni Yellows (adjustable sport shocks) all around. The ride height is set to Euro spec.
The car has seen one repaint in correct "Rubinrot" (ruby red) metallic; the paint shows well. The original Targa top is in excellent condition, inside and out.
The interior is in very good condition, and the seats and steering wheel are the 1985 and later style. It's unclear whether the seats and steering wheel were upgraded at some point, of if the late 1984 production Euro cars got this interior from the factory. Either way, the leather is in great shape, the steering wheel is the best Porsche wheel ever produced, the door panels and pockets are in good shape, the dash looks great with no cracks or warping, and even the floor mats are original.
Every time I drive this car, I can't believe it's nearly 30 years old because it still feels so fresh. Aside from the 911 Turbo, this was one of the fastest cars you could buy in 1984, and it holds its own against sports cars of today.
This is a turn-key car with good cosmetics and mechanicals. It's not a show car, but not a used up, ratty example like so many on the market at the same price. For more information, give us a call at 404-692-5250.
