The Mercedes-Benz SL has long been one of the most sought-after touring cars -- and the first and second generation SLs have skyrocketed in value due to their rarity. The R107 remains more affordable, simply because there are so many of them -- aside from the G-Wagen, the R107 was the longest-produced single series ever manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. The model ran from 1972 to 1989 with more than 300,000 built.
This 1982 380SL is a low-mileage, exceptionally well-maintained example with a trove of service records. The SL from this era earned the nickname "der panzerwagen" -- the armored car -- because it was so well built. Indeed, few cars from the era feel as solid and well-made as this one. Power delivery is smooth thanks to the overhead camshaft 3.8 liter fuel injected V8 mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. And with fewer than 100,000 miles on the clock, this Benz is just getting broken in.
Cosmetically, the car is wearing its original white paint -- which does have a patina appropriate for a 30-year old car. The navy blue canvas convertible top is brand new; both the soft top and hard top are, of course, included. The interior is all original and has held up well. The seats are clad in MB-Tex and show very well with no splits, holes or tears. The white-on-navy is a great color combination, and a refreshing change from the sea of beige SLs on the market.
But what really sets this example apart is the more than $8,000 in documented maintenance over the past year alone. New mechanical parts include a new power steering pump, timing chain, distributor and valve cover gaskets. All service and tune-up items are fully up to date. The air conditioning has been converted to R134 and blows ice cold; the car has a brand new compressor and a recent complete a/c service. The car's handling characteristics are like new thanks to new control arms and suspension bushings, and brand new Michelin tires. The car received a new transmission in 2007.
In short, this SL should need nothing but regular fluid changes and normal tune-up items for its next 100,000 miles. R107s come on the market pretty regularly, but it's very rare to see one with this much documented maintenance history.
