We could talk about James Bond and submarines or Julia Roberts on a street corner but if you are in the market for an Esprit you probably already know about its various star turns, so we'll get right to the point. This particular car has to be one of the cleanest, best maintained, most well-preserved Esprit Turbos on the market, and its color combination is stunning and crisp. With only 21,000 miles and extensive records, examples like this do not appear very often.
In 1989 this Esprit retailed for a whopping $69,395 (we have the original window sticker) -- big bucks today, insane bucks back then. For your money you got a high-strung Lotus twin cam 4 with a Garret turbocharger producing over 100 horsepower per liter. The engine and gearing make for a flexible package that feels at home anywhere in the rev range. Zero to 60 comes in the low 5's and top speed is around 150 mph -- this car can hold its own against much newer offerings. Suspension is stiff and tight, the non-power assist steering with only two turns lock to lock provides telepathic feedback. The steering feels as tight as new and suffers from none of the play that can be a common problem on these cars as bushings and bearings wear.
No expense has been spared in servicing this Lotus -- we have records since purchase. Within the last three years and less than 3,000 miles this Esprit has seen over $20,000 in dealer service. This includes cam belt replacement and top end work, new stainless exhaust, ECM and injector replacement, plus all coolant hoses have been replaced -- the list goes on and on. The A/C has been serviced and blows ice cold -- in fact all electrics work like new including gauges, lighting, wiper, headlight motors, blower motors, etc. This is a turn-key example that should need nothing to be enjoyed for many miles.
"Time-capsule" or "showroom" comes to mind when inspecting this Esprit's cosmetics. The original body panels and finish are in superb condition -- clearly a garage queen for its entire life. The interior shows virtually no wear -- leather covers almost every surface and remains supple, even on the dash. Carpets look like new, door panels are excellent, and all of the door and window rubbers look like they were manufactured yesterday. The dye on the steering wheel has faded a bit but the leather remains in like new condition with no wear or cracking. The front and rear boot areas look as though they have never been used. The factory fitted, Lotus branded Blaupunkt stereo works like new and actually sounds great
Included with the sale are stacks of service records organized neatly in a 3-ring binder. Original tools, factory service manual, the bag for the removable roof panel, original owner's manual, radio manuals with code, sunroof spoiler (manually fitted when roof is removed), copy of the original certificate of origin and original sales documents are all intact and in great shape.
