The Mercedes-Benz 107 "Panzerwagen" SL roadster needs no introduction, but this example is quite rare and worthy of special note. It's a highly-optioned Euro-spec car with a drivetrain and many features unavailable on U.S. market SLs, making it truly one of a kind. The same family has owned this SL since it was imported in 1985, and we still have the import documentation.
This 1980 280SL features an exceptionally smooth 2.8 liter twin cam fuel injected straight six never offered in the U.S. The engine is mated to a three-speed automatic gearbox that shifts beautifully. All mechanical systems are working as they should, and we have extensive service records since the mid-1980s. The odometer shows 180,000 kilometers -- approximately 112,000 miles -- so this SL is barely broken in. The a/c has recently been serviced and blows cold; brakes and steering feel great, and tires are nearly new Michelins. The car even has cruise control (with labels on the stalk marked in German).
The interior is in excellent original condition, with genuine leather seats (most of these SLs were finished in synthetic MB-Tex); the leather shows well with minor wear consistent with age and mileage. The front seats have factory seat heaters, another rare option -- especially for 1980 -- and this roadster actually has a rear seat, another feature not available on U.S. cars. Granted, those rear seats are tiny, but they're perfectly suited for small kids or pets. In the dash is a period-appropriate Blaupunkt stereo; all gauges are clear and working properly (note that the speedometer reads in km/h).
Since it's a Euro car, it has the desirable European bumpers and headlights. And it was ordered in a fantastic color not often seen stateside -- Petrol Blue Green Metallic. The finish is in good condition, the hard top is in great shape and features a defroster in the rear window, and the car has a brand new soft top.
In short, this 280SL presents a rare opportunity own a highly optioned, well-maintained and documented example on the market for the first time since it was imported nearly 30 years ago. Give us a call at 404-692-5250 if you're interested in learning more.
