 Vehicle Description
As the collector car market goes up and down, some special vehicles prove that a down economy just doesn't affect them the same as others. The Mercedes Benz 280SL roadster or Pagoda, is definitely one of those vehicles. It has been on a soaring price increase over the last 5 years that is truly remarkable and for good reason! When one looks at famous Mercedes autos of the past, such as the SSK, 500K, 300SL Gullwing and Roadster, you can easily find beautiful cars from each decade that became 6-figure investments. This is why many investors who missed those opportunities have turned their attention to the 1970's generation of Mercedes SL's. These stunning cars offer superb design, increased driver refinements and better performance to their owners making them not just excellent investment choices, but wonderful cars to drive on today's roads! The Mercedes-Benz W 113 is a two-seat roadster/coupe, introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, and produced from 1963 through 1971. The W113 SL replaced both the legendary 300SL and the 190SL. It was designed by Paul Bracq and the distinctive, slightly concave shape of its optional hardtop, conceived by Bela Barenyi, inspired its contemporary nickname, Pagoda. Of the 48,912 W113 SL's produced, 19,440 were sold in the US. All models feature an inline-six cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. All are rear-wheel drive, equipped with independent rear suspension, a feature that greatly improved road handling. The SL's weight was reduced in part by using aluminum panels for the trunk lid, front hood, tonneau cover and door skins. This example, a 1971, is considered the most valuable and sought after year in the 113 chassis. A total of 12927 280SL's were exported to the US and only 520 of these were the 1971 model year. It is equipped with a 4 speed automatic transmission, functioning air conditioning, two tops, period correct Michelin white wall tires, power steering, power 4 wheel disk brakes and the correct Becker radio. The car has undergone a complete cosmetic restoration and all mechanical systems sorted out. It needs nothing to go for a Sunday cruise or a cross country road trip. Professional inspection is welcome and recommended. The car collector market currently recognizes the value of the 280 SL's and poor examples routinely retail in the high $20,000 or low $30,000. Show quality cars are bringing over $100,000 at auction. Given the intrinsic value in owning a 280SL and the pristine condition of this car, it will not only provide years of driving pleasure to its owner but will also continue to be an appreciating asset. Check the current value of this car at the NADA Classic website (http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/1971/Mercedes-Benz/280SL/2-Door-Roadster/Values) and you will see the price of this car is a true bargain at $49,500.
