MGs are finally getting some serious attention from collectors, and this cool little 1972 MGB GT has a lot to offer the serious MG enthusiast. After sitting in a mechanics garage for 30 years, it was comprehensively overhauled in 2007 and offers all the desirable hardware, including chrome bumpers and an overdrive.
The story is kind of cool, where this car was purchased by a soldier who was deployed shortly after its purchase. It was entrusted to his brother, who, in 1977, took it to a mechanic to have some minor service work done and never returned. In 2007, the mechanic retired and finally liquidated the time-capsule MG. Since then, it has been repainted in the original Mallard Green, and since it spent so much of its life in hibernation, the sheetmetal was remarkably clean and it needed no major surgery. Nevertheless, the car was stripped to bare metal and repainted from there. The finish is modern two-stage urethane, and paint experts will note that this car could really benefit from a professional cut and buff, but even as-is its a very good looking little car. This is also the end of the line for the lovely chrome bumpers on the MGBs, a look that almost all enthusiasts prefer and which really does justice to the original design. Lots of bright stainless trim remains in great shape and all the emblems and decals have been accurately replaced.
The interior was also fully restored with handsome tan seat covers that give this MGB the ultimate British color combination. The GTs hatchback profile actually gives it a very spacious interior where its easy to get comfortable, and with a full array of clearly marked Smiths instruments it looks like a much more expensive car than it is. Matching door panels went in at the same time and burgundy carpets are OEM in texture and nap, and create a neat contrast with the green paint and tan upholstery. Theres a back seat area thats probably best reserved for people you dont like, but cargo space under the hatch is commodious and its easy to see how guys could haul their race gear to the track on Sunday and still drive the car to work on Monday. A newer AM/FM/CD stereo has been fitted in the original radios slot in the dash, just ahead of the shifter for the 4-speed gearbox.
The 1800 cc inline-four is the desirable 5-main-bearing engine thats renowned for its durability. Despite showing only 44,000 miles, the fuel system was flushed and the entire engine was overhauled with new rings and bearings, a rebuilt cylinder head, new water pump, and a recent tune-up. The 4-speed and overdrive work well and this car is not a leaker, somewhat of an anomaly among MGs. The chassis was undercoated when the car was new, and between that and the long-term storage, this is a clean little hatchback. Its not detailed for show, but if you want a great one to drive, this one has been comprehensively serviced and is ready to go. Even the original steel wheels are in excellent condition wearing recent 185/70/14 radials, although its worth noting that the original spare still lives in the trunk.
