Pontiac’s big news for 1961 was the addition of the sporty new compact car named the Tempest. Named as Motor Trend Magazines “Car of the Year” the Tempest was introduced to compete in the growing compact car market. The Tempest was innovative and packed plenty of Pontiac style with twin grilles, a sculptured new body, independent rear suspension and a power packed 389 that was cut in half making it Pontiac’s only 4 cylinder on the market. The Tempest continued to change through 1963 and in 1964 was redesigned again, now with three model options including the popular Tempest Lemans GTO, “The option that started it all”. The Tempest remained in production through 1970.
