Launched in 1959 as a competitor to the Ford Ranchero, Chevrolet offered the first El Camino in 1959. Originally the 1959 El Camino was based on the Impala, the half car and half truck El Camino survived for only two years and later reappeared in 1964 based on the Chevelle. Reborn in 1964 the new El Camino was firmly gaining ground and popularity as sales continued to grow. In 1968 the SS version had it's debut and the El Camino began to claim some fame in the the muscle car market.
