1973 Chevrolet Corvette

General Information

The 1973 Corvette marked the fifth generation which made it’s debute in the years of the first energy crisis. The new ‘73 ‘Vette was unique among Corvettes in combining a smooth body-colored nose and bumper with the original 1968-vintage "Kamm" tail. The new front bumper shrugged off minor dings as it met the new 5 mph safety standard, while this would be the last year that the rear bumpers remained chrome. Generally, the new styling was thought to be cleaner with a rear hood extension to cover the windshield wipers (instead of a pop-up panel), and a fixed coupe backlight instead of a removable one. The new Corvette was also improved with standard radial tires and a more efficient Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission option, and combined lap/shoulder belts. The engines were again further detuned for cleaner emissions, which resulted in lower engine outputs. Of particular interest to performance enthusiasts was the availability of the RPO FE7 Gymkhana suspension (high-rate springs/shocks for only $7) and the similar Z07 option (with heavy-duty brakes).
