| With emissions standards on the rise and the need for engines to run on low-lead fuel, GM’s decision was across the board when it came to detuning it’s engines and decreasing the horsepower. So the big news for the 1971 Corvette was the powerful LS6 454 engine, although it was rated at 425 hp still allowing the Corvette to remain a huge contender in the performance field. The carryover LT1 and LS5 engines were also detuned. Interestingly, only 188 LS6 Corvettes were built, with 12 more appearing under RPO ZR2, the factory racing package. |
