Taking over for the Corvair, was the all new Chevy II. Targeted to rival the Ford Falcon the Chevy II, was sporty, simple and conventional. While it outsold the Corvair in it's debut, it still couldn't beat Ford's popular Falcon. Standard in all the Chevy II's, except the Nova 400's was a new inline 4-cylinder efficient engine with 90 hp and great fuel efficiency.

Here, in the words of Car Life magazine, is ., "...maximum transportation at minimum cost. ..minimum in both initial price and cost of operation."

That sounds like the car just about everybody's been boasting they've built-doesn't it? But, when all the candidates were put to the test, it was Chevy II that came out on top.

In setting up the Engineering Excellence Award, Car Life established two clearcut criteria: I. The car must be designed for a purpose, built to do a job and tested to ensure continuing service. 2. The car must be thoroughly and completely engineered with each and every component created and manufactured to the most exacting standards.

Here's what the editors had to say about the way Chevy II measured up: "We think the Chevy II, in either 4- or 6-cylinder form, represents an important development in the American auto- motive field. ..it means easy maintenance and service, and it means long-wearing ruggedness. Its engines and transmissions are modern in concept and design, yet spring from ancestors proved by billions of miles. Its suspension and ancillaries stem from the same reservoir, yet are as up to date as the missile age." And sprinkled throughout the editors' reports on the engineering and road testing you'll find terms like "simple elegance," "reasonable size," "sound and solid" and "delightful car to drive."

In fact, there are eleven delightful Chevy II models to drive-sedans, wagons, hardtop and a convertible. Why not go to your Chevrolet dealer's soon and (if you'll excuse the proud parents putting it this way) sample some Engineering Excellence.
