1961 Mercury Comet

Few changes for the 1961 Comet were introduced, with the exception of a new grille and three vertical chrome strips that were added to the front fenders. Just introduced the previous year the Comet claimed to have more room as it was roomier and longer than its compact competitors. The biggest news came in mid-year for the 1961 Comet and was the introduction of the S-22 option. The series S-22 option on the Comet was basically a dressed up sportier 2-door sedan. The new sport option offered buyers a choice of 10 exterior paint colors and included bucket seats with a console, deep loop carpeting, front and rear armrests, a rear fender medallion Deluxe steering wheel, and factory under-coating. Sales were up for the second year of the little Comet and production was 14,004 S-22 series, 4,199 of the 2-door station wagons, 71,563 of the 2-door sedans, 85,332 of the 4-door sedans and 22,165 of the 4-door wagons. The S-22 option added just over $200.00 to the base price of the 2-door sedan. The 2-door sedan was still priced at just under $2000.00.
