Introduced in the spring of 1960 as a compact car based on the Ford falcon platform and powered with a six-cylinder engine. Both the Comet and Falcon share many of the same components including engine, suspension, and chassis. However, the Mercury Comet has its own distinct body lines, exterior ornamentation, and trim. The Comet was a noted as a "big car ride, with small car handling"! The new Comet came in four body styles including a 2-door sedan, 2-door station wagon, 4-door sedan and a 4-door station wagon. Convenience options included; trim package, heater & defroster, back-up lights, padded instrument panel and visors, a push button radio and two-tone paint, white wall tires, wheel covers and dual speed windshield wipers.
The base 2-door Comet Sedan was priced at just about $2000.00. The first year Comet sold well and the total production for the first year was 116,331. Of that 47,416 were 4-door sedans, 18,426 were 4-door wagons, 45,374 were 2-door sedans and the rarest was the 2-door wagon with just 5,115 sold. |
