DESCRIPTION

1927 Dodge Brothers Flatbed Truck

During the early 1900s, the name Dodge became a household name among consumers in our American culture. The Dodge Brothers, John and Horace were born in Niles, Michigan. They were great pioneers and helped put America on wheels during the early days of automotive manufacturing. The brothers established a small machine shop on Beaubien Street in Detroit in 1900, when the city was growing and the industrial minds and workforce came together to create the automotive capital of the world. Later, they would move their shop to a new location at Hastings Street and Monroe employing 200 men. Unfortunately, both brothers died within months of each other in 1920, John from pneumonia in New York City and Horace from influenza. Without the founders, the company was not able to duplicate its success, and financial advisors recommended that the Dodge Brothers\' widows sell their interests in the company in 1925. Three years later, Walter P. Chrysler purchased Dodge for $170 million. He later said, \"buying Dodge was one of the soundest acts of my life. I say sincerely that nothing we have done for the organization compares with that transaction.\"

For consignment, a flatbed truck built by the Dodge Brothers from 1927. This truck comes to us in unrestored form with a black steel front with little rust, and a wood framed bed, and no passenger compartment. Truly a blank canvas barn find, ready for the plucking from the Hallowed Halls of Classic Auto Mall.

Exterior
Fairly straight steel panels in black make up the front end of this truck. A cowled hood with louvered sides resides just aft of the large round headlamps and silver grille corral. Curvaceous fenders flank the corral and radiator and gently sweep down to textured running boards. The remainder of the body includes the black steel cowl and partial vertical windshield frame. All else has been removed, allowing us to view the wood planks mounted across the black steel frame and partially finished particle board bed floor. 21-inch wooden spoke wheels are all around.

Interior
There isn\'t much to say here, as the interior and cab are gone, so let\'s just give the facts. The original black steel dash is present and fairly intact holding a few of the factory Dodge Brothers gauges. A few round openings are noted in this dash, most likely for other gauges, pulls, and knobs. The factory steering column rises from the exposed inner workings under the dash and is topped with silver 4 metal spokes that once held the steering wheel rim. The clutch and brake pedals are still intact and the long armed shifter rises from the exposed transmission.

Drivetrain
A 212ci L-headed 4-cylinder engine, gas powered, sits in an unrestored engine bay. We note the hoses, belts, wires, intake manifold and carburetor, and exhaust manifold have been removed and are missing. A 3-speed manual transmission is on back.

Undercarriage
With the body and bed mostly removed we can cast our eyes on the solid steel factory frame and crossmembers. Leaf springs are on for the front and rear and the rear is equipped with mechanical drum brakes.

A blank canvas example of the Dodge Brothers truck initially built close to the end of the company\'s life. An unusual setup as it sits, rust free and here for the collection. Let your imagination run wild with this one, but I see a wild build in someone\'s future!
