For you numbers junkies out there, this 1999 Saleen is one heck of a rare beast. Its one of only eight Saleens built from a Cobra instead of a GT, and one of only 472 Cobras built in this color combination. It might just be the ultimate hybrid of ultimate performance Mustangs. Saleen has always had a way of giving the Mustang an edge without diluting its basic personality, and 343 is no exception. In fact, a lot of folks argued that the Cobra just wasnt unique enough given its performance (and price) differential over the standard GT, so this Saleen really delivers. It offers a complete body kit, including a front fascia, side skirts, rear wing, and lower valence that make it look downright predatory on the road. The Crystal White paint is beautifully preserved, showing almost no signs of use, and kudos to the Saleen techs for matching it so precisely before laying down their signature graphics package. And the stuffs totally functional, having been tested on the track and not just designed because some guy thought it looked slick-thats the Saleen difference. Inside, its pretty much stock Cobra, mostly because it was already a first-class cabin for doing the serious business of driving. Comfortable bucket seats are wrapped in charcoal leather and show very little wear and no damage over the past 13 seasons. Saleen added their own white gauge faces, matching gray floor mats, and a slick cue-ball shifter, but since Ford got the Cobra right, there wasnt much need to mess with success. The rear seats look completely unused, and with just over 16,000 original miles, this car was never used for daily commuting. Its loaded with every feature Ford offered, from A/C to the thumping Mach 460 audio system, making this a no-compromises supercar that can be enjoyed every day if needed. The 32-valve V8 that formed the core of the Cobra is a gem of a motor. Willing to spin to 7000 RPM with an exhaust note that sounds like ripping silk, its potent and makes the Cobra feel like a vastly more expensive car. Again, Saleen didnt mess with a good thing, leaving the stock 320 horsepower V8 intact, and focusing their talents on making the rest of the car as good as the engine. Upgraded springs, shocks, and sway bars give this car amazing reflexes, along with a select few chassis reinforcements. The rear end was upgraded to a set of 3.55 gears to better take advantage of the engines high-RPM potential, and a Bassani X-pipe and cat-back exhaust have been fitted which give this car a spine-tingling voice at full throttle. The wheels have their backsides painted black to hide brake dust, and wear massive 255/35/18 front and 265/35/18 rear performance radials. For future Mustang collectors, this is a rare gem, and even today, it is an absolute blast to drive. If youre looking for a unique Mustang, there arent many better choices than this Saleen.
