This year marks the return of Heritage’s permanent collection of antique and classic automobiles to exhibit, with a new interpretive theme. Visitors will discover that Heritage founder Josiah K. Lilly, III collected American automobiles in much the same way as collectors of all kinds assemble their collections of many types of objects. All have great passion for the objects they collect and some have a desire to share their collections with others. What Americans collect says a lot about our culture. What people of other cultures collect similarly defines their shared experiences.
The exhibit will bring Mr. Lilly as a person and his passion for collecting into the forefront of the visitor’s experience. It will highlight the process Mr. Lilly chose to find, restore, and think about what he called a “selective and outstanding” collection of vintage cars, as a proxy for everyone who collects.
