Were always proud of our inventory of clean vintage trucks, and this 1985 Ford F150 rounds out a collection that spans decades. Mostly stock and ultra clean underneath, it represents the most popular vehicle in the world in 1985, and presents in cool period style that recalls a great period in many enthusiasts memories. Ford was big on grays in the mid-80s. Mustang GTs in particular were always gray, dark gray, or black, but on this F150, the two-tone gray look is striking. With a bright red stripe to add some flash, its a tribute to the era and its quite remarkable that its custodians over the past 35 years have preserved that look. The square-jawed sheetmetal looks as good today as it did back then, and it is as instantly recognizable as anything this side of a VW Beetle. The paint scheme outlines the fenders, giving it a sporty look, and a chin spoiler was perhaps a precursor to todays sport trucks. For functionality, theres a bed liner, a set of polished bedrails, and oversized side-view mirrors for towing. By 1985, trucks were not just working-class tools, and Fords XLT models offered a ton of creature comforts. Cloth seats, full carpeting thats still in great shape, and stylish door panels that were a big step beyond the plain steel panels of just a few years earlier. OK, so the burled walnut on the dash isnt so convincing, but to their credit, Ford gave F150 owners a complete array of gauges in a sensibly-arranged dashboard. This particular pickup also includes factory A/C, a tilt wheel, and a JVC AM/FM/cassette stereo system that still sounds pretty good. The headliner overhead is in good shape, and the overall look isnt that of a truck that had workers climbing in and out, but rather a clean daily driver that someone was exceptionally proud to own, and it shows. Fords venerable 5.0 liter V8 delivers great torque, mostly due to the impossibly long snorkels feeding the dual throat throttle body and long tube runners on the intake. It starts with a surprisingly Mustang-like V8 burble from the dual exhaust and idles like it wants to run. Its highly original under the hood, with the only notable changes from stock being a set of newer ignition wires, and considering the vast array of aftermarket parts available, thats pretty remarkable. A 4-speed AOD automatic handles the gears, giving the F150 long legs on the highway and reasonable fuel mileage, and the undercarriage is still built with heavy-duty parts designed to work hard. Stylish 15-inch steel wheels with matching bright orange pinstripes are the perfect look for this hauler, and wear 235/75/15 Goodyear Wrangler radials.
