Even before World War II, Ford and Chevy were locked in a race for domestic truck supremacy. Neither maker offered a dedicated truck platform -- rather, their trucks were based on a beefed up car chassis. Ford introduced its Model AA 1-ton heavy duty truck in 1927 at the same time as its Model A car lineup to replace the Model T and TT cars and trucks. And by the late 1920s, nearly 40 out of every 100 vehicles sold in the U.S. was some variant of the Model A.
The AA trucks got the same robust flathead four-cylinder as the Model A, but with an improved four-speed manual gearbox with lower gearing suited to heavy loads (the cars just had three speeds). The interiors tended to be a bit plainer, as well, but from the seat forward the trucks were virtually identical to their Model A counterparts. The business end is quite robust, with a worm-gear driveshaft mated to the rear differential -- incredibly, some of these unrestored AAs are still being used as work trucks today.
This example, a 1928 AR, has been carefully restored. It's an early build with the parking brake on the left, a red steering wheel and desirable wire wheels painted in a subtle gold. The cab is forest green -- Henry Ford finally acquiesced and offered vehicles in colors other than black with the launch of the Model A. The interior is a saddle color that looks great with the green body. But the best part of this truck is its gorgeous hardwood bed and rails and matching wood toolbox mounted under the bed on the driver's side. You'll find no pine on this truck -- it's all oak sealed with durable satin polyurethane.
She's far too nice to use as a work truck, but the finished hardwoods will wear well over time with light use. There's no rust anywhere, fenders and running boards are in great shape and all body panels are straight with good gaps. The engine compartment is nicely detailed and the truck runs and drives great (well, as good as any Model A).
This would be perfect for a gentleman farmer or anyone else interested in a nicely restored early production AA truck. Give us a call at 404-692-5250 for more information about this 1928 Ford Model AR truck.
