The Land Rover "series" and Defender trucks are some of the most iconic 4x4 vehicles ever made. Timeless design paired with a stout drivetrain and rugged good looks create an unstoppable off-road vehicle -- or the ultimate urban explorer. In the U.S. we only got the Defenders (officially, anyway) for a couple years, but the rest of the world was more fortunate -- and we are starting to see good examples trickle in from abroad.
This particular 1987 Defender 90 came over from the UK in early 2012 in good running order with only 63,000 miles, but needing a full restoration. Atlanta-based Urban Land Rovers (a reputable Land Rover and Land Cruiser specialist) embarked on a no-expense-spared, full frame-off restoration. In an effort to maintain originality, the truck was disassembled and repainted in correct Marine Blue and the original drivetrain was fully tested, tuned, regasketed and repainted. Extensive restoration photos are available as well as a very detailed spec sheet from the builders at ULR -- but we just hit the high points here.
Urban Land Rovers left no system untouched during the restoration process, which means this D90 looks, runs and drives as close to new as you will find. Axles, exhaust, brakes, tires, wheels, electricals, seats, dash components, suspension, door panels, steering components, hoses and belts were all cleaned, tested, rebuilt or replaced. All parts were UK-sourced or custom fabricated to a very high standard. The 2.5 liter petrol engine tests at over 170 psi of compression (better than factory spec) on all four cylinders. The five-speed gearbox works like new with new components and linkages. This truck is equipped with rare (for a 2.5) power steering.
ULR also made a few upgrades for both a safer and more user-friendly package, such as fabricating and installing a custom DOM (drawn over mandrel) full roll cage. This aids in both safety and functionality; it also serves as the frame for a brand new All Wheel Trim canvas roof. This great-looking soft top seals remarkably well and provides cabin noise levels close to those with a hard top. When the weather is nice the top can be opened in a variety of configurations to facilitate open air motoring (or wheeling). The new roll bar also allowed for three-point seatbelts to be installed. But ULR's most ingenious modification is to the bulkhead behind the front seats. By cutting down and reinforcing the bulkhead, then tying it into the roll cage, we have allowed for quite a bit more seat travel. This, along with custom seat risers, creates a roomy passenger compartment -- a tremendous improvement over the stock setup for anyone over 5'8"
