The early 1970s were among the best years for American pickup trucks. Ford and Chevy were locked in an epic battle for light truck supremacy, and it showed as each marque tried to outdo each other with performance and style upgrades nearly every year. Chevrolet's C/K series of full-size pickups debuted in 1960, replacing the revered Apache line of pickups (the C denotes two wheel drive, while the K prefix was applied to four wheel drive vehicles).
This particular 1971 K10 Cheyenne is a very rare short bed 4x4 that looks, drives and sounds fantastic. In my humble opinion, 1971 and 1972 are the best years for classic Chevrolet pickups. In 1971, all Chevy trucks got standard front disc brakes for the first time, and this example also shipped with power steering. 1971 was also the first year for the Cheyenne, Chevy's top trim level that included upper and lower side molding and tailgate trim, plus nicer interiors. And of course, 1971 was the first year of the iconic "egg-crate" grill, making this just about the best looking truck around.
Under the hood is a Chevrolet 350 fed by a spread-bore four-barrel Quadrajet carburetor. The setup is more efficient since the primaries are smaller than on a square-bore carb, but there's plenty of power on demand when you open those giant secondaries. Plus I love the induction sound these Quadrajets make. In true retro fashion, it has a three-speed manual gearbox with a column shifter -- a "three on the tree." Both high and low range transfer case settings work flawlessly -- you could pull down the Empire State Building with this truck in four low.
We've added a power brake setup and also completely refurbished the front brakes, including rotors and calipers. Power brakes plus power steering makes this truck easy to drive.
This truck was fully restored to a high standard -- the paint looks great and most of the chrome trim is brand new. The seat upholstery is brand new, too, and uses correct materials. Door panels, wood steering wheel, floor covering, speakers and CD player are all new. All body panels are nice and straight with good gaps, and there's no evidence of bad bodywork or rust popping out anywhere. And underneath, the floor pans and cab corners are solid and rust free. The bed is in great shape, too, and is coated with a spray-in liner. And this K10 is riding on correct Chevrolet rally wheels with new Goodyear Wrangler 31x10.5 tires that really look great. The 4x4 suspension gives this truck an aggressive stance; combined with the Cheyenne trim package, it's a great look.
She's much too nice to be a work truck (unless you have a desk job), but suitable for the occasional trip to the Lowe's or Home Depot. It's nice enough to take to a cruise in and get compliments, but not so nice that you can't drive it.
