 Vehicle Description
After working on a few of these old Land Cruisers, I'm starting to like them as much as the Early Broncos we restore around here. First, their build quality is excellent, and I'm always amazed by how everything still works reliably, even 30 and 40 years after manufacture. The FJ40 ran for over 20 years starting in 1960, and Toyota made continuous improvements throughout its production run. By the time this truck rolled off the line in 1977, FJs were getting the updated and more powerful 2F engine mated to a floor-shifted four-speed gearbox. This means you can actually attain safe highway speeds. Toyota saw fit to add even more creature comforts, such as front bucket seats, a radio and power front disc brakes.

This example is super solid and shows well, both topside and underneath, and it's painted in the best classic Land Cruiser color: sky blue with a white top. The truck is correct and unmolested, with its original steel wheels and hubcaps in excellent condition. Tires are nearly new Goodyear Wranger 235/75/15. Cab corners, rockers, door bottoms and floor pans are all rock solid, and there's no evidence of previous accident damage. Both the fiberglass and steel portions of the removable top are straight and solid.

The interior paint is original and shows some patina of age, but is in very good shape overall. The front seats were just reupholstered in correct material; the rear jump seats are in good condition with no splits or tears. The original door panels and vinyl floor covering still look great, as do the original instructions for hubs and 4WD. In characteristic Toyota fashion, all gauges, including speedometer and odometer, still work perfectly. There's a newer radio in the dash with a USB port for your MP3 collection and a custom storage box behind the front seats. And by 1977 these were getting factory three-point seat belts.

This truck drives just as a vintage Land Cruiser should; steering and brakes feel great, as do the clutch and gearbox, and both low and high range four wheel drive works fine. No major leaks, smoking or oil consumption from the engine. With just 122,000 miles, this FJ is ready for another 100,000 more.

But the best thing about these old FJs is the removable hard top, and this one has a roll bar. You'll be able to enjoy open-air rides this spring and summer without endangering life and limb. In short, we are offering a turn-key driver with good cosmetics -- it shows well but has had some paint touch up. It's a head turner but not quite show worthy, and a lot of truck for the money.
