 Vehicle Description
The early Barracudas were the last of what I call the "Industrial Strength" Mopars, which were those factory-built heavy-hitters that you could drive to work on Friday and take to the track (and win!) on Saturday. This neatly finished 1966 Barracuda has a smart-running small block and has definitely been built for combat while giving up none of its handsome good looks. The Valiant-based Barracuda is one of Chryslers more attractive designs of the 60s, and the fastback featuring the massive rear window is instantly recognizable amid the flood of pony cars of the era. The paint is uncreatively called Dark Red, but it suits the Barracuda (never Cuda, that would come later) quite well, giving it a subdued look that definitely helps lure the unsuspecting into battle. Panelwork is straight and impressively straight for a car with this much performance and unit-body construction, and its pretty clear that someone wanted this car to stand out. All the chrome is nicely restored, including the twin grilles up front and the unique rocker trim. And that massive chunk of glass is excellent, with no signs of cracking or delamination, which is critical because finding another one can be a big problem. The industrial strength theme continues inside with a no-nonsense black bucket seat interior. Theres no center console, just a 4-speed shifter sticking out of the transmission tunnel, and even if you didnt know what kind of car you were looking at, youd assume it was fast just by how the interior looks. Fresh seat covers, new carpets, and nicely preserved door panels all work together to prove once again that Chrysler interiors were some of the most stylish of the period. Factory gauges are sensibly arrayed ahead of the driver and give a fairly complete look at the engines inner workings. Theres plenty of room under that rear window for, say, a set of slicks and the rear seat folds flat for some extra space, making this a practical pony car. The no-frills attitude continues with just an AM radio and a distinct lack of options. No doubt this one was built with just one thing in mind. It would be a mistake to under-estimate the 340 cubic inch V8 under the hood. While the big blocks get all the glory, a snarling small block like this is a legitimate threat thanks to its lighter weight and willingness to rev. Fitted with a unique air filter assembly and finned Mopar valve covers, it has a race-ready look, but starts and idles easily so its street-friendly. Dual Flowmaster mufflers give it a throaty voice, and you know it was built to take no prisoners when you see a built Ford 9-inch rear with 3.70 gears and disc brakes at all four corners. Classic Cragar Pro-Star wheels are a drag race look and wear 255/60/15 white-letter radials. Fast, formidable, and fun, this Barracuda definitely has the moves to back up its bad boy looks.
