 Vehicle Description
If you dont think AMC was a viable company in the late 60s, take another look at this brutal 1968 AMX. From the only company willing to take chances, you got a potent performance car that could put the big names back on the trailer, and today is a bargain-priced way to enjoy some vintage muscle. While red and black cars seem to get all the attention, this AMX looks simply fantastic in Frost White with black accents. The two-seat bodywork isnt all that apparent until you park this car next to its Javelin stable-mate, and then you see where the muscular stance comes from. With quarter panels like coiled springs ready to explode, the car looks fast just sitting still, and emphasizes the long hood/short deck look that practically defined the muscle car era. The bodywork is beautifully finished, with straight panels, which is important since reproduction stuff just isnt available for these cars. The handsome front end offers a deep chin spoiler and a wide grille opening to feed the 390 underneath, and its matched by a set of wide-set taillights and a ducktail spoiler out back. Black racing stripes certainly help with the racy appearance, and the chrome bumpers look awesome against the glossy white paint. When you climb into an AMX, you instantly know its special. The absence of a back seat isnt noticeable from where you sit, but once you turn the key and bend it into a corner, the smaller size is immediately apparent from its eager handling and impressive cornering abilities. Buckets were standard equipment, emphasizing the racy feel, and these wear fresh black seat covers in the original pattern. This one was initially equipped with an automatic transmission, but today a 4-speed has been fitted and looks awesome poking out of the transmission tunnel topped by a Hurst shifter. The gauges have been rebuilt and look great, assisted by a trio of auxiliary instruments under the dash, and the original AM radio still does its thing. Youll also find a correct space-saver spare with inflator bottle and a complete jack assembly in the trunk. The engine is believed to be the original 390, one of only 4399 390 cars built that year. With sparkling Frost White paint as a background, the engine looks amazing with a fresh coat of AMC Turquoise and a bunch of chrome dress-up items. And while they didnt exactly crank out aftermarket parts in volume, there is a vintage Offenhauser intake topped by a Holly carburetor to help make horsepower. Its nicely detailed and shows very little use since the restoration was completed, a testament to the quality of the work and the care the car has received. The chassis has been undercoated for durability and sound control, along with a fresh Flowmaster dual exhaust system, along with traditional Torque-Thrust wheels and BFG radials. AMC fans, rejoice, the AMX is finally getting its due as a serious muscle car, and this one is simply gorgeous. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom.
