In 1957, when America was revelling in hot rods and burger joints, the German company that made the funny Beetle brought over just 4,130 of their version of a sports coupe - the largely hand-built Karmann-Ghia. From 1956 to 1959 this body style was unique and apart from later Karmann-Ghias due to its front end treatment, with the headlights being positioned lower in the bodywork and the forward air intakes being smaller. This cleaner appearance (IMHO) made the early Karmann-Ghia a classic - a sports coupe for the Monaco jet-set, with practical VW underpinnings.
