Chevrolet''s Chevelle was one of the most popular midsize American cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Spanning three generations from 1964 to 1977, the Chevelle was available as a coupe, convertible, sedan or station wagon with a variety of drivetrain options. But the first- and second-generation Super Sports are among the most collectible Chevelles, and indeed the most collectible muscle cars of any kind.
The SS option package definitely packed a performance -- and stylistic -- punch. All Super Sports were V8 powered, featured an upgraded suspension with sway bars for better handling, got power disk brakes, and were fitted with a 12-bolt limited-slip "Positraction" rear end. The SS appearance package included the "power dome" hood with hood pins over a black-accented grille, sport wheels, racing stripes, and of course those SS badges. And interior SS appointments included high-back bucket seats and round gauges.
This 1969 Chevelle SS has been restored to a very nice driver standard, and looks fantastic in silver with black racing stripes and a black vinyl top. The body is straight with good panel gaps; the bumpers, chrome, trim, lenses and glass are excellent. The underside looks good overall -- rockers are very nice although there is one small section of the floor pan that has been patched.
The interior has been fully restored, with new carpet, new door panels and new upholstery on the front and rear seats. The headliner, package tray and dash pad in good condition. All gauges are clear and working and there is a tasteful (and helpful) aftermarket tachometer attached to the steering column -- plus auxiliary gauges under the dash.
Under the hood is a 396 big block with stock internals, a Quick Fuel carb, Edelbrock intake and headers. With a big block you get big power even with a stock build, and the smooth idle and low-end torque provided by the stock camshaft are ideal for most driving conditions. The engine is mated to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission; the clutch and gearbox feel great, and the power delivery of this build is perfectly matched for the four-speed. It''s a pleasure to drive -- and with power steering and power brakes, it steers and stops as well as it accelerates.
