 Vehicle Description
Given the propensity for early GT350 clones and stock restorations, its no surprise that you dont see many Pro-Touring early Mustangs. But once in a while you find one that nails it, like this stunning 1965 convertible. It includes an injected 5.0 under the hood, an upgraded suspension, and just enough appearance mods to grab your attention. After seeing this car, maybe the Mustang guys will rethink their next restoration. What better color to paint an early Mustang convertible than bright red? The body mods are quite subtle, since you definitely dont want to erase the inherent goodness of the original design. But look closely and youll find a custom hood with ram air scoop, shaved emblems and trim, and ultra-straight sheetmetal. The bright paint looks as deep as the Marianas Trench, and someone probably spent a week on the cut and buff to get it to shine like this. I mean, its really impressive and our photos cant quite convey the depth of the finish. Panel gaps are excellent, including that custom hood (which is steel, not fiberglass, by the way), and for a unit-body convertible, this one is reassuringly straight and solid. The parchment interior is a lovely contrast to the usual black or white, but it sticks to the original design to keep it looking right. The seats feature fresh reproduction Pony seat covers, and there are matching door and side panels to complete the look. Black carpets keep it from being too light and again, theyre original spec. The dash has been given a new dash pad, but the instruments are Auto Meter Phantoms with white faces in a custom panel that replaces the original instrument panel perfectly. A/C has been added under the dash in an original-style unit, and Shelby fans will undoubtedly recognize the wood-rimmed wheel atop the tilt column. An AM/FM radio with a trick iPod hookup mounted in the ash tray lets you listen to all your favorite music anytime, anywhere. The engine is a 5.0 crate motor with an Edelbrock fuel injection system that has been cleverly disguised as a carbureted setup. With finned valve covers and a chrome air cleaner, it looks quite right under the hood, although things like this serpentine belt setup and heavy-duty shock tower braces will give it away. Its linked to a C4 3-speed automatic and a 9-inch rear out back, so theres no worry that youll break it. The front suspension is fortified with tubular suspension components and a new rack-and-pinion steering system. The rear suspension offers Shelby-style trailing arms and a set of coil-over shocks to really sharpen the handling. Four-wheel disc brakes help it scrub speed effortlessly and the dual exhaust has a nice rumble that is aggressive but never annoying. And the finishing touch are those 17-inch polished Torque Thrust wheels which fit perfectly in the stock wheel wells. This slick convertible will run circles around its stock siblings, and will easily give even a Shelby a run for its money, all in a package that retains all that was wonderful about the early Mustang.
