Sometimes you run across a car that the factory COULD have built, but didnt. This 1967 Chevelle convertible is such an animal, packing a very OEM-looking 427 into a nicely restored and very subtle A-body ragtop. No SS badges, no chrome wheels, just a potent sleeper that looks like something GM might have let slip out a side door.
Its hard to go wrong with Sebring Silver, even on a big car like the Chevelle. For one thing, it never looks dirty, and the subtle color is just right for keeping a low profile when youre out hunting for your next stoplight grand prix victim. This one fits together quite nicely, especially for a convertible. The icy finish shows a nice gloss, but not too much, so it really could pass for 1967 all over again. The original hood remains, complete with cool faux vents, and its a genuine pleasure to see a V8 Chevelle without a blacked-out SS grille and tail panel. In fact, there are no badges anywhere on the car save for a single CHEVELLE callout on the hood, thats how subtle this one is. Fortunately, all the trim was retained and polished to a high shine, and anything that needed help was sent to the chrome shop for a full restoration. Against the silver paint, it simply glitters.
Complementing the icy bodywork, the bright blue interior looks right and prevents the car from being boring and monochromatic. Most of the interior appears new, including the seat covers, door panels, and carpets. The front bench definitely enhances the sleeper vibe, and I personally dig the look of a Hurst-shifted 4-speed sticking up out of the transmission tunnel on a bench seat car. The original dash carries factory instrumentation, but to keep a low profile, there are no auxiliary gauges or tachometer, again a tribute to the builder who knew that subtlety was the key. The only notable modification is an AM/FM/CD stereo head unit in the dash, and perhaps you can also count the gray convertible top as a modification, but it looks awesome.
The real story is, of course, under the hood where someone has neatly fitted a Corvette L36 427/390 and gave it a factory makeover. Chevy Orange paint, including on the valve covers, a correct open-element air cleaner, and factory style fittings throughout might make some guys at car shows do a double-take. Then youll notice that it was built for combat, with a massive aluminum radiator and dual fans, power steering and 4-wheel disc brakes. The inner panels are beautifully finished, suggesting that great care went into the build, and the underside is just as nice. All-new components include a gas tank, driveshaft, and new shocks all around, so its ready to rumble today. Corvette-sized Rallys with SS spinners look awesome with fat 245/60/15 BFGoodrich radials.
