 Vehicle Description
Out of production for decades and theres still strong demand for the legendary VW Microbus, especially those with the coveted Westfalia camper conversion. To date, nothing else has appeared that can match its combination of utility, reliability, and simplicity, and, of course, theres no denying the appeal of a vintage VW to folks who were there when they were new. This California-bred 1968 Microbus is exactly what youve been looking for. Solid, clean, and never used for anything more challenging than exploring the edges of civilization. The bodywork is clean, as youd expect from a California pedigree, and all the original badges, lenses, windows, and other hard-to-obtain parts are still there. The white paint is practical, and you can look at it as a slice of originality or a blank canvas on which to create your own Summer of Live tribute. The Westfalia camper top gives it a distinctive look that VW fans can recognize a half-mile away, but beyond that, there are no notable modifications (and you cant really call the camper top a modification anyway). As you may have noticed, this one doesnt shy away from hard work either, boasting a well-earned sticker from The Great Race, this one has been babied, but youll be buying in confidence that this one isnt afraid to put in some miles on your favorite road trip. Inside, its as funky and as practical as you remember. Someone has lovingly dressed it up with period fabrics for the curtains and tablecloth, but the rest is surprisingly sedate and subtle for 1968. Tan vinyl is durable, easy to maintain, and wont go out of fashion. The original gauges are all functional, and the upright driving position is probably something well never experience again. An AM/FM/CD stereo has been fitted, the original ventilation controls are still indecipherable, and theres plenty of headroom fore and aft. The pop-up tent is in excellent condition, making room for a family to spend a weekend together in the great outdoors. Details like the portable galley, the various seating and dining configurations, and a bright, airy interior make it an excellent choice, then and today. Power comes from a recently rebuilt 1600cc Volkswagen flat-four, straight out of the Beetle. No, it isnt very fast or powerful, but it is reliable and virtually maintenance-free, so youll always get where youre going...eventually. Routinely driven hundreds of thousands of miles, these vans are legendary in certain circles, and they come by that reputation honestly. The engine bay is exceptionally clean, having been restored 2 years ago, with all the important parts still in place. It starts with a traditional VW exhaust note, and things like a new fuel pump and rebuilt brakes are important if youre hitting the road. Its a bit grungy underneath, but theres no structural rust, which is a death sentence for these vans, and it tracks straight on the open road. Newer 175/70/14 Pirelli radials have been fitted to the original wheels, so it drives better than ever. Iconic, practical, and timeless, this VW Microbus is the one youve been waiting for.
