The 1971 Mustangs were completely restyled. They were over two inches longer and had new hood and concealed windshield wipers. The styling left little doubt that the cars were Mustangs, but they were lower, wider and heavier than any previous models. A full width grille, incorporating the headlights within its opening, was used The Mustang corral was again seen in the center. The roof had a thinner appearance. New door handles fit flush to the body. New on the options list were the Special Instrumentation Group package; electric rear window defogger and a Body Protection Group package that included side molding and front bumper guards. The fastback-styled ''Sportsroof'' was now available dressed in vinyl top. Sadly, two of the most exotic engines were gone. The Boss 302 and the Boss 429 powerplants had bitten the dust. Although rumors persist that five cars were assembled with the ''Boss 429'', they are, as yet, unconfirmed. There was a new Boss 351 Mustang that provided a more refined package, with a better weight distribution layout than the front-heavy Boss 429. Standard equipment on base Mustangs included color-keyed Nylon carpeting; floor-shift; high-back bucket seats; steel guardrail door construction; DirectAire ventilation system; concealed windshield wipers with cowl air inlets; mini console with ash tray; arm rests; courtesy lights; cigar lighter; heater and defroster; all-vinyl interior; glove box; E78-14 belted black sidewall tires. The Mustang grade coupe had the same basic features, plus bright pedal pads; DeLuxe high-back bucket seats in cloth trim; DeLuxe instrument panel; DeLuxe two-spoke steering wheel; electric clock; modeled trim panels with integral pull handles and arm rests; right rear quarter panel trim with ash tray; dual paint accent stripes; dual color-keyed racing mirrors (left remote-control); rocker panel moldings; vinyl roof; wheel covers and wheel and wheel lip moldings. The Mustang Mach I had all of the basic equipment, plus color-keyed spoiler, hood moldings, fender moldings and racing mirrors; a unique grille with Sportlamps; completion suspension, trim rings ans hub caps; high-back bucket seats; honeycomb texture back panel applique; pop-open gas cap; deck lid paint stripe; black or Argent Silver finish on lower bodysides (with bright molding at upper edge); E70 x 14 whitewalls and the two-barrel ''302'' V-8. A NASA styled hood scoop treatment was a no-cost option. The Mustang Boss 351 had even more extras. In addition to the basic equipment, this model featured a functional NASA hood scoop; black Argent Silver painted hood; hood lock pins; Ram-Air engine callouts; color-keyed racing mirrors (leftremote-controlled); unique grille with Sportslamps; hub caps with rim rings; bodyside tape stripes in black or Argent Silver; Color-keyed hood and front fender moldongs; Boss 351 callout nomenclature; duel exhaust; power disc brakes; Space Saver spare tire; competition suspension with staggered rear shocks; 3.91:1 rear axle gear ratio with TractionLok differential; electronic R.PM. limiter; functional front spoiler( finished in black and shipped ''knocked-down''); 80ampere battery; Instrumentation Grou; F60-15 white-letter tires; 330 horsepower High-Output 351 cubic inch V-8 with four-barrel carburetion; special cooling package and wide-ratio four -speed manual gear box with Hurst shifter.
