This beautiful 1972 Oldsmobile 442 is about to change your opinion on when the muscle car era ended. Not only is it handsome, its plenty quick with a great-running Olds 350, embodying the spirit of the original in what is arguably GMs best-looking A-body. If this car were wearing Chevelle badges, not only would it cost twice as much, but it would be slower and you wouldnt have that great Oldsmobile styling. This one has been nicely refinished in its original Sunfire Yellow with contrasting black stripes, and it just screams MUSCLE! Although the 442 was reduced to an appearance package by 1972, theres no doubt the look still works. From the split front grille to the rear wing, plus the aggressive stripes that highlight the bodys dramatic curves, this car looks fast just sitting still. The unusual color really works with the Oldsmobile muscle car image, being subtle and sophisticated but with a high-impact overall look. Theres also plenty of chrome, including nicely refinished bumpers, and for 1972, Oldsmobile offered blacked-out headlight bezels and multi-lens taillights that were a 1-year-only design. The only interior you want with your Sunfire Yellow 442 is black, and this Cutlass Supreme convertible offers optional buckets with a center console as a very nice upgrade. The interior is in such nice shape, I have to believe that it has been restored, although there are some original components that suggest this car has always been treated as something very special. For example, the carpets appear original, but they arent faded by the sun nor threadbare from use, so someone has been careful for the past 40 years. The original wood appliques on the dash and door panels are excellent, as are the stainless-faced instruments. As an upscale muscle car, this 442 also offers factory air and power windows, as well as a modern AM/FM/CD stereo with speakers neatly installed in the rear quarters. It also sports a black power convertible top complete with glass rear window, and the tight fit is impressive. The engines gold paint means this is the Oldsmobile version of the venerable 350 cubic inch small block, but it shares virtually nothing with its Chevy, Buick, and Pontiac cousins. With a characteristic Olds rumble, it starts easily and runs well, making prodigious torque and launching the bright yellow convertible with real muscle car authority. The engine bay is quite tidy, showing signs of recent work including a new power brake booster among other new components. The dual exhaust system is new, too, and exits under the rear bumper using polished tips. Its linked to a TH350 3-speed automatic and a 10-bolt rear, so its reliable and easy to maintain, and its obviously rust-free in all the important areas.
