DESCRIPTION

Looking for a new caretaker and loving home is a very rare, original, unrestored example of a 1963 Mercury Monterey S-55, 4-door hardtop. Only 1,203 of these vehicles were made and this example has only 6,500 total original miles (believed by experts to be the lowest mileage example) and has a great story as well. The S-55 is the sports edition and trim package with bucket seats, floor shift, big engine, etc. The original Scottish green paint (95%+) with the Sultana White top (100%), trunk area and interior are in great condition. The only thing not original is the drivers fender mirror and door locks- both put on by the original owner from his crashed 1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser. This vehicle still has the production stickers in the window and come with the original owners manual and rare Mercury US glove box map, along with several advertisements and dealer brochures which were collected over the years.
This car is even more rare since less than 25 vehicles were known to have the 390 ci, 2-barrel, single exhaust engine configuration pair to the Merc-o-matic automatic transmission. This combination is very unusual and doesnt even show up in most documentation, but it does match the data plate. The engine compartment has been professionally detailed to enhance its show worthiness and it does show extremely well. It is equipped with power steering and brakes, and has the factory installed AC that blows cold. It comes with a Mercury script maintenance free battery to match the original lead acid battery.
In 2005, the muffler was replaced but most of the pipe was maintained. Front end bushings and brakes were gone over in 2006. Also in 2006 the original tires were replaced with Coker manufactured, period correct, bias ply tires (have 2 original tires) and now have less than 800 miles on them. The carburetor was rebuilt in 2007. Admittedly this is a trailer queen, but she runs and drives great as it glides down the roads. The unique powered breezeway window along with the manually rolled down windows and the hardtop configuration makes for a very large open area- and is a great parade car or Sunday cruiser. This car gets attention wherever it goes: It caught Dennis Gages attention when he picked it from over 1,000 cars to be featured on My Classic Car in 2008. It placed in the top 40 of over 1,000 cars at the St. Ignace show in 2007 rare for a non-custom or hot rod vehicle. It was selected as 1 of 50 specialty display cars for the 2010 Iola Car Show center tent. It was the curators pick at Henry Fords Green Field Village show in 2007. It was noted as the Best Unrestored Car in 2005 by the Mercury International Club Show. This car always places well in its class, and has won over 100 class, specialty, and best of show trophies from local, regional, and national shows. It is show ready and museum worthy, and would be a great addition to any collection.
As they say, they are only original once and this is the best original example of this car anywhere.
Asking $27,000. Below appraisal value.
