At first glance, you might be thinking this is a nice, but kind of ordinary Malibu. And thats entirely the point. Yeah, the bright red paint is eye-catching, but under that plain-Jane bodywork lies a thumping 542 cubic inch big block, a reworked suspension, and enough horsepower to do some serious stomping on the street. But before I get ahead of myself, lets have a look at the bodywork. The Malibu was Chevys mid-sized hardtop, and in 1966 it looked sleek and simple, almost like an oversized Corvair. This one has been treated to a respectable paint job in bright Regal Red, but I think the builder was careful not to make it too nice, because drawing attention isnt what a sleeper like this is about. Instead it looks good enough to get a thumbs-up on the road, and youll definitely be proud to be seen behind the wheel, but if you light up the tires and spray hot, melted tire rubber onto the quarter panels, well, you wont worry about it very much at all. There no fake SS emblems here, adding to the illusion. Chrome is quite nice, the stainless has been polished, but the overall look is very factory-correct and not over-done. Fans of sleepers will be especially pleased with the interior, which features a front bench seat, cloth upholstery and a big honkin shifter lever sticking out of the transmission tunnel. The fabrics are authentic reproductions, giving it a very pleasant atmosphere inside that is comfortable and inviting. Matching red door panels are crisply rendered and the carpets mimic the original pattern. Its still got the original gauges, but a Sun tach has been mounted on the steering column, but low and out of sight, and auxiliary gauges are under the dash. You may also note that this is a factory A/C car, and the updated system blows cold, so you dont have to prowl the streets and sweat at the same time. An AM/FM/cassette head unit was installed some time ago and still sounds good, while the trunk is now carrying an aluminum battery box and CD changer. So about that big block. Its a 542 cubic inch monster thats been built to take no prisoners. With a Demon carb atop an Edelbrock intake, it inhales deeply enough to swallow a bird at full throttle, and the long-tube headers and 3-inch exhaust system sound like an angry god is chasing you. An aluminum BeCool radiator keeps it cool and an MSD ignition system lights the fires. The front end components are all-new, so it tracks straight, and the transmission is a heavy-duty 5-speed that accelerates hard and cruises easily. Out back, theres a bulletproof Ford 9-inch stuffed full of Detroit locker for maximum traction. Four new SS wheels have been fitted with fat 245/60/15 BFG radials. Theres more here than meets the eye, and one drive will convince you that whats under the hood is what matters, not some fake SS badges. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom.
