| Vehicle Description |
Here is an original Lead Sled from the '60s; a very rare piece of automotive history in great condition.
The car features its original Flathead engine which had been built with Triple carbs (4th is a dummy).
Transmission is stock 3-speed manual with column shift.
The Firewall and Inner hood features artwork by an uncredited artist; not something which is seen too much these days, but remember - this car was customized decades ago!
Paint is blue/purple Metalflake - it's an original-era job. Modern 'flake is easy to achieve, but this car clearly had MANY coats of paint/laquer applied to achieve the desired result; the final effect was VERY radical back in its day. The paint on the car is SO thick it's glass-like - undoubtedly a very time-consuming and expensive undertaking.
ALL of the traditional, trend-setting kustom modifications were applied to this historic '49:
HIND QUARTER WINDOWS REMOVED WITH DOOR PILLARS FOR 3-WINDOW STYLE.
FRENCHED '59 CADDY TAILLIGHTS, TWIN AERIALS, AND HEADLIGHTS.
METICULOUSLY CHOPPED AND LOWERED FOR PERFECT SLEEKNESS, YET DRIVABILITY.
FULLY SHAVED - NO OUTER DOOR HANDLES OR CHROME BUMPERS.
REMOTE TRUNK DOOR.
CUSTOM GRILLE.
CUSTOM HOOD AIR SCOOPS.
CHROME LAKES PIPES.
CHROME REVERSE FRONT WHEELS.
WIDE WHITEWALL BIASED-PLY TIRES.
CHOICE OF FENDER SKIRTS - FLUSH VERSIONS FITTED, BUT LARGER STYLE ALSO PROVIDED.
CHROMED ENGINE BAY/BATTERY COMPARTMENT.
This special Kustom had been displayed/stored for many years by a Michigan collector. It was acquired by the late Tom Pogo of Outhouse Engineering (Wisconsin) in more recent years. I purchased the car from him after some mechanical work had been performed. A second electric fan was added to ensure that the Flathead had superior cooling. There has also been some new wiring installed. I have service/repair bills for just under $5000.
The history of this car is a huge attraction - most 'street rod' 49 Merc Customs command attention from general onlookers, but this Merc also gets the same attention from hard-core enthusiasts who quickly recognize it's vintage kustom status. The car stops traffic wherever it goes, and easily stands-out among a line-up of eye-catching kustoms. It's quite simply one of the most radical, attention-grabbing examples of them all and most hot rod/custom folks know how sought-after ANY '49 Merc Kustom is. It's an awesome challenge to find another '49 with this much style and history.
As with virtually all private sales, this vehicle is sold 'as-is', 'where-is'. All unrestored cars need a degree of TLC - this historic custom is no different. Buyer makes all necessary arrangements to ship vehicle from its Southern California location. Feel free to email with any questions. Please note: the car is being offered for outright sale - I'm not interested in any trades, thanks. |
