In the 1960s, Pontiac absolutely nailed the full-sized performance/luxury niche, offering a variety of models that were both sporty and comfortable. Cars like this 1964 Catalina convertible were the perfect blend of horsepower, style, and amenities. With a sophisticated color combination and a very reasonable price tag, this Catalina is big fun any way you look at it.
The paint job is a few years old, but the dark blue paint does a great impersonation of Nocturne Blue, which was a 1964 Pontiac color. Rendered in two-stage urethane, it has a depth that GMs Magic Mirror enamel couldnt match and is far more durable. Theres a bit of orange peel in the finish, but it doesnt detract from the cars presence on the street or its fantastic good looks, and a modest cut and buff would pay big dividends. Beyond that, its quite straight with none of the issues often associated with older ragtops. The doors fit well and dont bind, those big quarter panels were blocked and sanded before the paint went on, and the dark paint shows off the subtle curves that make these big Pontiacs so handsome. Traditional Pontiac styling cues like the split grille, sporty fender-mounted mirror, and stacked headlights look fantastic here and they must have been truly avant-garde in 1964. The chrome bumpers sparkle and the Catalina script on the front fenders truly pops against the dark paint.
The tri-tone interior is where Pontiac stylists really earned their keep. With intricate patterns that look sporty, the wide bench seats offer room for six without compromising comfort. The patterns and textures of the reproduction seat covers look quite correct and work well with the matching door panels. The carpets very well may be original and show some fading, but nothing that needs replacing and thanks to a set of color-matched floor mats, theyve still got a lot of life left. The instrument panel is a gorgeous combination of stainless, chrome, and blue paint, and the ultra-trick steering wheel will start conversations everywhere you go. The wide speedometer shows bright, crisp numbers and the lower rod of knobs manages the headlights, climate controls, and original AM radio. Of note, the A/C has been converted to R134a, although with that white power convertible top, youre not likely to need it. The trunk features a correct mat and full-sized spare.
Pontiacs venerable 389 cubic inch V8 provides motivation for the big Catalina. This is a NOM code 11H engine, which indicates 267 horsepower and 410 pounds of torque, plenty to make the big ragtop feel like a much smaller car. Its dressed in a bright coat of Pontiac Turquoise with a stock air cleaner and a lot of attention to detail. New components include the modern A/C system, an upgraded power brake booster, and a recent dual exhaust system that sounds just right, purring with horsepower but not being obnoxious about it. A 3-speed automatic transmission snaps off shifts with a performance feel, and with Pontiacs desirable and valuable 8-lug wheels, the car looks flashy and upscale. 225/75/14 whitewall radials are the right choice here, too.
