 Vehicle Description
You sometimes find the best-driving cars in the least likely places. This 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air looks quite authentic, but underneath theres a thoroughly modern driving experience, complete with all the modern conveniences and a 5-speed manual gearbox. With only 100 miles on the build, this extremely fresh car is ready to start collecting trophies for its new owner.

Both Crocus Yellow and India Ivory were on the color charts in 1956, although not together. As this Bel Air proves, the combination works quite well and looks right on the stylish 2-door sedan body style. Having spent most of its life in Alabama, the body is quite straight and needed none of the major surgery that northern cars do (only the floors are new), and that pays off in the final product. Check out how well the doors fit, the evenness of the gaps, and the tight panel alignment thats so critical on 56s due to the sweeping trim that runs from nose to tail. The paint was done using modern urethanes, so the shine goes on forever and they wisely chose to leave the metallics and pearls out of the formula, so it looks right on the sixty-year-old bodywork. All the chrome and stainless was restored and polished to really make a statement, and the 1956 Chevy taillights are so cool that they look like some kind of modern aftermarket setup, but no, thats how they came from the factory.

The full custom interior drops most of the pretenses of keeping things original, although it was clearly influenced by the factory design. Power bucket seats are the most noticeable upgrade, and theyve been covered in two-tone vinyl using a quilted pattern that might have come right out of the 50s. A shiny tilt column with a leather-wrapped banjo steering wheel does the same, and the dash has been refinished and filled with factory instrumentation. Vintage Air A/C lives under the dash and stays pretty much out of sight, but theres no mistaking the look of a manual shifter, with this one connected to a 5-speed gearbox. Gray carpets provide a soft contrast and make the interior a rather relaxing place, so the miles roll by with ease. Power front windows are another handy feature and the trunk is fully upholstered using matching gray carpets, and a vintage spare tire is a nice retro touch.

The engine is a 350 cubic inch V8 thats built to cruise and is quite entertaining when you crack the throttle. Thanks to a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor and intake, throttle response is sharp and with a few billet dress-up pieces and Chevy Orange paint, it looks fantastic when you pop the hood. The accessories are mounted tight to the block, with a modern alternator and R134a air conditioning for reliability. The 5-speed provides a tall overdrive gear, so its a blast to hammer around town yet settles down nicely at highway speeds. The front suspension is stock, augmented by power disc brakes, and the original rear end still does its thing out back. Thats a new dual exhaust system with glasspack-style mufflers, a fresh gas tank out back, and fresh 225/70/14 Dunlop radials on vintage-looking Torque Thrust wheels.

Beautiful to look at and a pleasure to drive, this 56 Chevy pretty much nails the formula for the modern street rod. Call today!
