Unlike so many of its siblings, this car is impressively solid and rust-free, thanks to living in the warm US, and thanks to expert workmanship, fit and finish are probably better than new. Of course, modern paints deliver a superior shine, and now that the Midget has crossed over to collectability, theres definitely incentive to put a quality paint job on it. The Midget arguably wears the US-mandated plastic bumpers better than the B, and sporty additions like the front wing-mounted mirrors and trunk rack give it a traditional look. Climbing inside, youll find theres good space, even for six-footers, and the comfortable buckets are easy to settle into. With original seat covers that are in excellent condition, clean door panels, and correct black carpets, it has a simple look thats typical of 70s British roadsters. The control layout is typically British, with an array of elegantly simple gauges set into a flat instrument panel, which is brand new. The 4-speed shifter falls to hand easily, and the pedals are set up for easy heel-and-toe shifting. Even in 1976, the radio was almost an afterthought, but it has been thoughtfully upgraded to a JVC AM/FM/CD stereo unit just ahead of the shifter. With some practice, youll learn to easily flip the brand new convertible top open and closed from the drivers seat whenever the mood strikes. And despite the cars size, the trunk is actually usable for a few overnight bags and includes a matching wire wheel and tire as well as a jack. In the US, the Midget was called the Midget 1500 due to the 1493 cc inline four under the hood. It produced more torque than the earlier 1275 cc unit, which was better suited to American tastes, and the performance it offers is entertaining. The engine bay is quite tidy and that is the original engine, dressed in an aluminum valve cover and single Zenith-Stromberg side-draft carburetor, suggesting that this one has never been modified, raced, or abused. It fires with a sporty blat from the single tailpipe and seems eager to rev as you run through the fully-sychronized 4-speed gearbox. Underneath the simple chassis and floors are in good original condition, and thanks to a layer of undercoating, its well-preserved with no rust in any of the critical areas. Classic wire wheels give this one an upscale look and wear suitably skinny 155/80/13 blackwall radials. Still fun after all these years, this Midget is an awesome entry-level roadster whose size is inversely related to the amount of fun it offers. Call today!
